Casement windows or shutter bug?

Here in the USA, casement windows usually swing outwards.  Unfortunately when I flip the opening so that they do open outwards and then put on shutters, they are put on the inside of the house, even though I select exterior.  Flip the window so that it swings inwards and the shutters flip to the outside.  Crazy but true.  I am using Anderson Window C25 that is in the Anderson Windows BIM.  If I select interior, with the window swinging outwards, they appear on the exterior.  Weird but true.  I think it's a bug, can someone confirm this?

Hi Joe,

I have not tried the specific window you mention but the behaviour should be the same. You should find that if you flip the window so that the opening is the way you want it FIRST, then add the shutter and choose Exterior, it should put the shutter on the Exterior.  If you add the shutter, then flip the window, the shutter will reverse.

I flipped it the way I wanted it with the swing out, put on the shutters as exterior, and TFP15 puts them on the interior.  If I select interior, they get put on the exterior.

Hi Joe,

I imported the same window as you used and I can see what you mean. I would normally insert a window so that the glass is on the inner edge of the wall and we nearly always use sliding windows, so it worked fine for me.  Actually they sit more into the centre ofthe wall so you have to change the Offset to move the glass into the centre.  Because the window you have used actually shows the windows hinged open and you wanted them opening out, so the issue has become obvious.

Just reasoning on it for a moment...
For automation purposes, presumably, the shutters are actually connected to the window, not the wall and set to install on the surface of the wall OPPOSITE to where the glass is.  In other words the program assumes that the glass is, more often than not (?), on the inside edge of the wall, regardless of which way it opens, (as windows can open both ways). This raises the question of which is the Exterior of the window? Probably there is not such a thing!

I don't really know whether this is a bug or not - maybe it is just the text in the shutter dialog box that is wrong (?).  It implies that shutters will be attached to the Exterior of the wall, but really it is connected to the exterior side of the window not the wall. Maybe the buttons need to nbe reversed or, more accurately,  reworded in the dialog box either, so that it is clear what it does. It obviously is not clear at the moment, since it depends on whether the glass in on the inner or outer edge of the wall.

I will raise the issue with the programmers, however, as it also works the opposite way to V14. V14 only had Exterior shutters but it put them on the face of the wall where the glass was, not the opposite face so if you wanted the glass on the inner edge of the wall it was just too bad, you got the shutters on the inside!  No doubt this is why both options have been given in V15.

Interestingly this feature (adding shutters on to Interior and Exterior sides of the wall), was introduced in V15 and has only just been introduced (last week) into an update to Envisioneer - TFP got it first this time! (We also got the "Force wall to be exterior" and Wall, line and Arc Offset, first too - Maybe they are using us as Guinea Pigs for Envisioneer?). However it does appear to be back to front, compared with V14.

By the way, looking again at your subject line, I don't think it is a "Shutter Bug".  (Isn't that something to do with cameras !!?)

In the USA, the glass edge goes to the outside edge.

Hi Joe,

I do not know where the default position for the glass is in Australia for timber home. Here in Western Australia, nearly all construction is double brick so the window is in the centre. Where it is brick exterior and timber or steel internal walls, as a few are, it is still in the centre, so the offset has to be moved anyway.  I have not seen a timber or steel wall with siding in a long time but I would imagine the glass would be on the outside.

Either way it looks like V14 was right and V15 is wrong.

Hi Joe and Allan! I have done some test with the casement and shutter bug? As Allan say is not a bug, it look like the standard for outside glass go to the inside edge. When you flip opening, you put the inside on the outside, that is the reason they the you have to use inside shutters then you flip opening from the standard. With Anderson windows even it look like the standard is glass go outside it go inside, as the windows in standard catalog.  The contents of this is the the inside of a window is the there the glass is nearest the edge, and then you flip a window the inside go out, the shutter follow the glass inside glass = inside shutter.

It look like Anderson windows have the inside out as a standard, so you have to use the inside shutter if will have the shutter on the outside of the wall.
