How to create Roof Guttering and Corninces

This post should explain guttering and the same process can be used for Cornice.forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,867.msg4165.html#msg4165

You can add cornice of course using Crown Moulding on the Wall properties Trim tab, but that only uses an image to simulate it - it is not truly 3 dimensional. You can also create your own 3D profile within the Trim / Crown Moulding area (as described in the Guttering post) and it can be easily applied then to the Wall. By choosing custom you can create your own moulding shape but it is not very easy.

Using 3D moulding does increase memory size somewhat and can slow down you computer - that is why the default Crown Moulding is image based. Guttering is not an automatic process, so the post above ism a simple solution for that.

Thanks Allan, worked perfectly in making the guttering.  However I'm not sure how to create a cornice, there's no cornice shape that I can find, do yo have to custom make this first?  Considering the amount of rooms to do this for it might be too much trouble and stick to the crown mouldings.

Hi Plucka,

Once you have created the Cornice in the first place it becomes part of your catalogue and you can choose to use it anywhere. You can set it in the Wall Trim properties and whenever you use that wall it will use the cornice profile that you made.

I am replying now from my phone so can't check now, but of the selection of profiles available there may be one close to what you want if rotated. I think you can rotate it when you select it. If not, then select Custom and draw your own - you can use it then or later.

Another method is to create a 2D profile, extrude into 3D, save as .3ds, import to TFP

For cornices, using 3D program, extrude profile as inside and as outside corners, save each as .3ds, import each to TFP

Then in TFP, use corner and straight sections, inserted and elevated as needed...and apply textures. Straight section lengths easy to change.

Seems like a lot of work but it is brute force easy with max. user control.....but not nearly as easy as could be done in TFP directly if you can get custom profile shape to work OK.

Or if TFP next version had a better tool to do this.

Actually there are already guttering (straights and corners) and downpipes etc already in TFP in Plumbing and Fixtures - Exterior, but they are very hard to use (as would an imported 3DS file for Cornice) as you have to individually set each length to each room and manually connect each corner. Using the Guttering profile is easy if you simple convert a Layout line to Members.

The Custom Profile of course already has some fancy shaped mouldings but a bit to vertical for me - a Cornice usually spans the corner more.  Unfortunately if you choose to Add a new profile at this point it is somewhat hard to draw. The secret with it is understanding the angles and the fact that the line MUST JOIN to create a completely enclosed area or it will not work.

In the example image I have simply used the existing 'Tapered 3' profile, flattened and rotated it to 135 degrees on the Details tab. Not specially decorative, but still 3D never the less and dead easy to do if you tick the Mitre Corners boxes. Just trace the walls with your Layout Line (anticlockwise), Select all of them, Right click 'Convert to members', select the Tapered 3 profile and adjust the settings, especially rotation and Reference Point to the top setting.  You now have a cornice, mitred at the corners sitting on the floor.  Select one edge, Right click Select All Similar, and Right Click Elevate to the ceiling height.

Once created this way you can drag the edges in and out as necessary to resize it - the mitred corners will not break but each side will adjust in legth as needed. If you resize the room, you can simply resize the cornice accordingly (turn off the Snap options or it may snap to the cetre of the wall rather than the surface).
