Painting both sides of a door

Hi,

Is there a way to paint one side of a door leaf one color, and the other side another color? This is often the case with entry doors, where the outside is painted to match the shutters, and the inside is painted to match the walls.

Hi Gary,

There is no way to do this as far as I know. 

Normally you would not see both sides of a door at the same time, so if you are creating photorealistic images of your nodel you will just need to change the door colour depending whether you are doing an inside or outside view. 

If you are doing lots of views, then save the model again with another name and use one for the outside images and the other for the inside ones.

Okay, thanks Allan. I suppose I could also create a box object the same width and height as the door, but only 1/16" thick, position it in front of the door and paint it. (Fortunately, the door in question is a slab with no windows or contours).

A slab is an easy solution for this job. Or use two doors offset a bit....but this makes a lot of work if there is glass or you open/close the door.

Another alternate is to fix in post...i.e. adjust the rendered image in Photoshop or similar...usually faster than a re-render.  I do often for color comparisons/changes (tho not exact as color bleeds can be wrong in reflections)...but fast if render times are long.

You can fix other stuff too if a render looks off and adjusting in TFP would be hard to do....like lighten shadow areas...fast/easy in Photoshop....like a few seconds and fully adjustable/controlled.

Or to highlight an area or suppress an area to make a point or clarify an area to construction people and avoid other distracting details...etc.

Yes the box idea would work if you have no widows etc in the door. Aligning it could be a bit fiddly if you want the door open and you would not be able to change the opening easy but generally you do not do that once it is set anyway.

Unfortunately I don't think Doug's idea of having two doors offset would work, as both doors need a wall to hold them and if you put the two walls, lightly offset, on different locations, the first door will cut both walls and you cannot insert the second door. It may depend on the version you are using, earlier versions did not cut both walls, so it may be possible in V12 or V14.

The box idea looks like the best solution and you could still use an image if you wanted contours or windows.
