Hi Robert,

Looks good!

Earlier I seem to recall you (I think it was you and this project - or was it??) saying you had left a street light on in daylight. I just wondered if that has happened again, as the shadows seem to be in different directions. I wondered too if you had not set the water to partially transparent, as you cannot see the tiles through the water (or are the tiles just a border at the top?)

How much quicker was the render? Did you time before and after?

Hi Allan,

I intentionally turned some lights on because between the existing Plants and the enclosed area of the Back yard , the Terrace and  Tower is always in shadow do to the actual Home position at any time.

The Pool water is set to 55 transparency and I can see through in the drawing but  when ever I render I noticed it would not render transparent.

I tried 75 as well and get the same results ???

All renders were done in Basic, the client wanted to see many angles, as you notice, I posted 6 areas. ::)

Each render took average 15 minutes but between re positioning the sun to find the best natural light, some areas I had to render at least 6 times.

This are the best of an average 4 hours for each set,  this is revised set 8. due  to client's request ::)

I started rendering since 2:00 pm (US eastern Time) on the 19th and would email the client each set then the client would request new modifications, last set was send and approved on the 20th at 3:20 AM, went to sleep and I resume today to work on the interior after trying some advance test  ::)

I have not done any Advance render waiting until the final revisions request by the client where approve!!!! :P

Today I will try rendering in advance  for the first Time since I installed the new video card on 10-19 and see the result

Hi Robert,

Just a few random thoughts on rendering you may want to try.

Water transparency is really the same as glass so you may need to go to almost full transparency. All you really want is a bit of colour and reflection. You should then get shadows going down into the water to the bottom of the pool too.

If the area is very shady, and I can see this one would be, you could try Slightly Cloudy or even Overcast. Advanced may do this particular scene better in this regard. It will turn the lights off automatically.

Render time seem very long for testing. When I am just playing to get the light correct I set the image size to very small - no bigger than 640x480, even less sometimes. When I get the light right is when I increase the size to do the final renders.

When you start trying Advanced you may find light angle slighly different and pool transparency also, so you may need to tweak these again. Also bear in mind you only need to render once for that sun position. After the first view do not close the screen but use the Modify Viewpoint option and move the camera to a new position from the dropown list of cameras at the top or just move the camera and the click Raytrace.  This avoids repeating the time of the radiosity phase.

Fascinating at this point is to click the Radiosity option. You can the FLY (speed) around the whole model and see how it looks from every angle. I have even used this option to take clients on a guided tour. It does not show reflections or direct bright sunlight on things but is very realistic just the same. Hitting the Raytrace button adds the refle tions etc and created to final image.

Hope some of that helps.

I'm using ProArchitect and in the first renders before installing the new video Card the water worked!

When having the Video Card Hardware acceleration checked,  Object created using Pad can't be selected.

I can Only select Pad objects with the Hardware Acceleration unchecked  ???

I turned off Elements on Location and left on Elements on Terrain which has the Pad objets ( Water, Driveway, Concrete yard deck etc) and was able to render in Advance;

I'm doing a test with just the Elements on Location On using Advance render and Hope it will render.

I tried rendering Advance the full project with the video Card acceleration ON and it Failed Got some no permission error  ???

I'm trying a full project  Advance render with it  Acceleration Off and see what Happens

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

I am no expert on computer issues but often the ability to select items is a video card / driver issue - usually a driver update required but since you have a new card then presumably the driver is up to date! Pat or others may give some advise on this.

Have you tried turning down hardware acceleration on the video driver rather than within the program? This allows for more gradual reduction in acceleration and it may only need a slight tweak to stop the problem.

I don't think hardware acceleration really affects rendering - I THINK that is only involved in moving around the screen. Rendering is more to do with calculations I THINK (as I said I am no expert in that area so may be correct on that!).

Let us know how it all goes (and what any error messages say!).

I agree with Allen, I think the video card (for TFP, this is not true for all programs; Photoshop now uses vid card GPU for some operations) acceleration 'on' means the display of objects/scene is faster and you can move around quicker or set lighting to a better quality.

But AFAIK the video card does not do anything of significance when rendering, that is a CPU function and uses RAM not GPU or video card memory (except for displaying results).

A few versions back of TFP on XP I had to often switch between h/d acceleration on/off but using win7 on both laptop and desktop I leave h/w accel. "on" all the time.

As I mentioned earlier, sometimes the newest video card driver does not work as good (in some programs) as a slightly earlier version. And as Allen indicated problems usually show up as display view and selection errors. You can tell if it is the vid card by turning h/w accel off and if problems follow the on/off then it is usually the card driver. Also as he noted, sometimes you can cure problems with reducing vid card performance via its own settings in its own control panel . . . but I have never had to do that but others here have some experience with it.

I fixed the Card issues for now!
This are the latest sample

The water is working better but even though is set transparent the reflection is overpowering the transperency ::)

Hi Robert,

These are looking really good!! It is a most interesting model and well done!  :D

You can reduce the reflection by reducing the "Specular" setting on the texture - that will make it look more real and stop it overpowering the 'inside' of the pool.

Hi Robert,

It is safe to play with Transparency and Specular. Don't touch Emmissive - makes it glow. That is used to make a light globe or lampshade appear to be illuminated.
