moving an elements location

I inadvertently added a bunch of fence lines to my "Outbuildings" Location(Layer). Now, I have spent the last hour going over the docs and forums trying to figure out how to move an element from one location to another. Any Ideas?

Easy (when you know how!  )

Select all the items you want to move (by dragging the mouse over them,  or hold down the  Shift key and select them one after the other) then right click and choose Duplicate to Location. Choose the Location and it will ask if you WA t to delete the original.

I knew it had to be something really simple but I could not find any reference to this topic in the documentation or on the forum. On my TFP 3D Pro V16, after I have selected the offending elements and I right click all I get in the resulting menu are plain Move and Duplicate. Selecting either one results in the 4 way arrow with no option to move location. Am I missing something obvious here?

Hi Roger,

Sorry about the delay - I have been away for a few days.

I have sort of misled you. You can move building elements from one location to another as mentioned (right click Duplicate to Locations) but I have just registered that you said "Fences". Fences are always inserted on the Terrain, which is selectable from all Locations. You cannot move them from the Terrain so the option to Duplicate To Locations does not exist (as you have found).

Why did you want to move them?

Ahhh now I sort of get it. I originally wanted to move the fences because (I think) they were stuck in my "2nd Garage" Location. I subsequently selected them, after about the tenth try, and saw that the Duplicate to Location tool had suddenly appeared in the drop down menu. I immediately used it to move the fences (in my newbie dumbness) into a Fences location that I had created. I did also see that the Fences location is shown in the view filter under the "Elements on Terrain" tab.

I am still finding understanding this tools usage to be a bit elusive. Just when I think I have it figured out I run across another situation where I am expecting to see the duplicate to location tool but its not there. An example of this would be where I created several arcs whose radius was was the length of a diagonal measurement. Where the arcs intersect is the exact point in space where that fence, boundary line, or corner of a building should exist. Having finished with the arc or circle I wanted to move it to my dimensions location where I could preserve it for future reference. However I could not and still cannot get the Duplicate to Location tool to come up when one of these arcs or circles are selected?

BTW: what the heck are "Skipped Items" in the Project Estimate cut list? I substituted Pine for Spruce to cut costs and now there are a bunch of skipped items in the Cut List.

Arcs, circles and lines are 2D objects so you cannot move them to a different 3D Location - they will appear under Drafting on the Notations tab in the View Filter. You cannot move them into Dimensions as they are not Dimensions and this heading is reserved for them only. Dimensions have specific functionality, as do circles and lines, so they can only be in their own group.

Drafting, Dimensions, Fences, Walls etc are groups of related elements not Locations. Locations are basically used to create vertical separation in 3D modelling, First Floor, Second Floor etc although you can add many others of course for many different reasons.  Terrain is a separate Location by itself with different attributes and some elements are fixed to the Terrain.

You will only see Duplicate To Locations when you have selected objects that can be moved. If you select a Wall for example to duplicate it to another location but accidentally select a circle or dimension line also, then the Duplicate To Locations option will not appear, as lines or dimensions cannot be duplicated to any other location - they stay on the Notations tab. You have to be careful to only select 'duplicatable' 3D items.

I have not come across 'skipped' items. I will have to look at that later for you.
