F1 & Freezing

1.  No matter where I am or what I'm doing nothing ever happens when I hit the F1 key.  Is this another feature not included with this program?

2.  Generally, at some point I will be working on a simple task (drawing a line using the mouse scrolling across a drawing while using a high level of zoom - meaning it takes forever and 2 days to navigate across the work area) when the program freezes.  Much of the screen goes gray but even the items that remain are "static" (non-operational).  Obviously, save frequently and learn the location of the ctrl, alt, del keys is one solution but is there some other way to recover from this problem?

F1 works fine for me. Does the F1 works for other screens or programs? (it is a Windows feature)
The description of both issues sound like a hardware problem
I'd suggest to check the issues with the technical assistance
