Importing from Sketchup Warehouse

I would like to leverage the thousands of 3D models available in 3DS and skp formats. Unfortunately neither seem to work exactly as I would expect.

When I import an skp file the model is loaded OK. It has the right scale and includes color/texture. However, I models imported this way can't be loaded into 3D Workshop.

When I import a 3DS file the resulting model can be loaded into 3D workshop so that is better. However the models import at 50% scale and they lose all colors and textures.

Are there workarounds to these limitations? Perhaps I need to tweak my settings. Please advise.

Hi there,

Yes, this is the expected behavior

Sketchup: as it is imported with the right texture and size, I am not sure what would be the advantage of the 3DW.
3DS: as you stated, you can import the object and right click it in order to open it with the 3DW.
In addition and if you don't want to open it in the 3DW, you have 2 resources in the main program
1 - select the object=> tool options (right bar) => you can change the dimensions by size or by %
2 - If you visualize the object in Liveview => you can change the color or material => confirm if the SmartWand is activated for complete application resources.
If you are interested, I have an e-book regarding the import and export process http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/298949
Hope this helps

Thanks for your quick reply.

The reason for importing into 3DW is to customize objects. For instance, I imported a number of Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets with raised panel doors. However, for a couple my wall cabinets I want glass doors. In 3DW I can remove the raised panel to reveal the shelves behind. I can then place objects inside the cabinet to give the kitchen a more finished look. In another case I want to remove the doors completely and add valance to the top stile.

In general it seems that 3DW is very limited. For instance, I created a granite counter but I don't see any way to create an opening for a sink as there are  no obvious 3D boolean operators.

I could use another tool (perhaps sketchup make) but I like the convenience of being able to launch the 3D editor from inside TFP. Would Punch 3D Workshop Pro integrate with TFP?

Hi there,

Is always a good idea to take an extra time to learn the program and features. TFP, as any program, has a learning curve. The best way to learn the program, IMO, is practice + practice + practice => Read and follow the manual (this is important), see the videos => try to create elements not related with your project, so you will become familiar with the commands and how to develop the different components. You will be surprised to learn all the program features and capabilities. I will use your questions about cabinets as example
If you build a cabinet using the cabinet tool (Floor tab), it will have a counter. If you insert a sink on this counter, the hole is created automatically!  :)
Check the image attached.

The Custom Workshop offers many options, including the creation of a cabinet cutout.
