Interior/Exterior Wall Studs

We're building a house and I ordered this product to [hopefully] give me the ability to be able to visualize, space plan, and/or change things if need be.

I'm looking for help trying to figure out which width I should set the studs at. The program gives you a choice of 4" or 6", but I measured the studs and they're 3-1/2" wide.
So my question is: should I change the wood studs to 3 1/2" or does the program already know that a 2" x 4" really isn't a 2" x 4" anymore?

Hi T,

The descriptive name 2x ?  , is just a name that you can edit or leave as is.  Walls properties are where you set the actual Width of a stud and by default they are set to 4.5 " , which for interior walls includes drywall on both sides.

When dimensioning such a wall it reads as 4.5" which may or may not be good for actual construction drawings. If the carpenter doesn't realize that dim includes drywall you could lose 1" in one room and gain it in another.

The other aspect of 'studs' is in the material take offs and the program knows how to count them reguardless of the actual width.

So, I guess it's up to you on how you want to represent them. One inch usually makes little difference in a large room but can be a factor in a small room or a situation where you are placing a wall or window and have oversized trim.

I've been leaving it at 4.5" to this point.

Since there are small and specific spaces to be considered, and no drywall at this point, I'll do the properties thing you mentioned and take it from there.
I have another question to ask regarding the roof, but I'll wait until after I get the shell and interior walls done 1st.

This is an interesting point. What about exterior walls? Let's say a 2x4 wall with 1/2" drywall on the interior, 3/8" sheething on the exterior, airspace and then 4" brick facing. If I choose a 4" brick wall from the program catalog, how thick is the program making this wall and were do I place this wall on the subfloor? Normally the outside of the 2x4 is flush with the outside of the subfloor, sheathing goes over framing and subfloor. So, let's say I have a 30' x 40' subfloor os-os, how do you place the walls - respectively, if you place the walls first with the floor filling in, how do you dimension the walls from say brick os-os?

Sorry I don't have an answer for your question... but I'm curios as to what 'os-os' means?
