OK, when looking at the catalog in the catalog manager, there's a set of elements called "members" that includes basic wood and steel building materials.  I've never been able to access this set and would write them off as inaccessible like "parts" except that in the sample 3 house, the first floor shower walls are made out of them, along with the shower seat.  Does anyone know how I can use these elements?  Since I can't find anything about them anywhere in the forum, I'm figuring you all know something I don't.

Hi,

There elements are basically used INSIDE walls and only seen if you turn off the wall surfaces. You will then see the framing used inside and you can change this if you want using the wall properties Specify Framing button where the elements can be accessed.

I suspect Sample 3 was created in Envisioneer which has much expanded functionality that presumably allows a Member to be used this way.

Do a Search for Usefull Shapes and you will find some instructions for importing Shapes. The Box mentioned here will do the same thing if set to to Glass. Like the solid Member it has only one surface. You could use walls or many other elements to make these shower screens but most other elements will have multiple surfaces that have to be changed to glass while the Box only has one.
