Match Roof Planes when Two Structures Are in Different Locations

HI

I am trying to add a fully enclosed and covered porch to an existing structure. I have drawn the existing on one location (first floor) and given it the correct foundation and roof. Now I want to add in the new porch in another location so I can get separate cut and materials lists. But after fidgeting with it for a couple of hours I still havent been able to make the two roofs match. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Roger,

I have not quite got the picture yet. The two locations work independantly so they will not automatically blend together.  Maybe an image would help to explain your comment "I still havent been able to make the two roofs match".  In what way are they not matching?

The porch I am trying to add is perpendicular to the main house. The main house roof on that end of the house is a hip roof. I tried to put a hip roof on the free-standing end of the porch and a gable on the end that attaches to the house but I cant get the house roof to join with the porch roof. So I thought I must be missing something and therefore was asking for suggestions.

Sorry Roger but I still not quite sure id I am understand it correctly.

I tried to put a hip roof on the free-standing end of the porch and a gable on the end that attaches to the house but I cant get the house roof to join with the porch roof.

Do you mean that the gable end "that attaches to the house" should extend over the other roof?  If that is what you mean, just drag the gable end so that in 3D the top dissappears in to the main roof.  If the Porch roof still appears to be a gable at the edge of the main roof, then go to the Properties of the porch roof and select "Solution Type" (bottom of dialog box) and select the one that says "Ignore Next Storey".  If you are concerned about the Materials list for the Porch location then right click and use the "Cut Opening" tool to cut off the corners so that you have a triangular section on what you had as a gable end.  Set the sides of the triangular section to Gable also and move the edges so they align closely with the main roof. You may have to check that frequently in 3D. You may also want to turn off the roof overhang on these edges too (set it to zero or 1MM).

If that does not cover your query you will have to post an image of the issue so we can see exactly what the join problem is.

Hi Roger! Can you ad a image or bld file, or if you have OpenOffice3 draw a sketch, of what you will accomplish in the draw and export it to png or pdf-file.

You can try this,  ad two roof on same location,
1) one at the house, use by perimeters, this must be drawing first
2) and one roof for the porch, use picking points,
3) drag the edge of the porch-roof so it connect to the main roof I think this will work.

I think Roger wants to use a second location, as he wants separate Material and Cutting lists.

Now I want to add in the new porch in another location so I can get separate cut and materials lists.

Thanks Guys - I didnt think to, or realize that I could, just select that end of the roof in 3D view and drag it over the existing roof... way cool.

So Allen, you suggestion worked. Attached is a view of the finished outline.

BTW: The one remaining issue with this drawing is that the step wizard doesn't seem to want to let me have a step one riser high. It insists on having 3 risers. So in the above png view you can see that the three riser step crawls half way up the door. Is there a way to just have one tread?

Hi Roger!
You need to change the Overall hight in the, "Stairs/Ramps", properties to the right hight.

Right click on the stairs, and from the meny select properties.

Set overall Hight to 100 mm and Riser maximum to 100 now can you chang to 1 or 2 steps riser hight 100 or 50 mm

Another option, especially if no railings are involved and you only have one step, would be just use the Custom Member from Interior Accessories / Decorative. Set the size and textures accordingly and use the right click 'Elevate' to sit it on the deck level.
