Windows 7 new install

I've had V14 installed for a while on my old XP PC which I've finally retired.
I've now got a shiney new Windows 7 job and am failing miserably to get past the "1628 - failed to complete installation" error message, I think if I've read everything correctly that this is to do with the installer rather than the programme?
Has anyone got any tips to allow me to force Win 7 to work?  (I'm new to Win 7, but am literate enough to play on PC's with reasonable confidence).

Pat, thanks for the welcome.

I've followed the thread and tried the options around Clean Install - no joy (I don't have a CD though, just the download), I've tried the install from a USB stick - no joy. I've tried to do the "security policies" thing but the instructions refer to XP, having a dig around on Win 7 brings up the following....

"The Local Security Group Policy Editor will only be available in the Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterpise editions. You will not have the Local Security Policy Editor available in the Windows 7 Starter and Home Premium editions"

Which leaves me a little stumped, I've also tried right clicking on the install file and "run as administrator" - no joy, also tried the install trouble shooter to force Win 7 into an XP Sp2 compatability mode.

Happy to try something else if there are any thoughts?

If it helps at all the old XP Computer is still running, so if there's some way of "cludging" things over I'd happily try that?

The only message box I get is from "InstallShield" with the message in a window that reads "1628: Failed to complete intallation"

So sounds like on the right path. 

Have completed the following:

1. - None of those processes running.
2. - Cleared C:\Windows\Temp = 69 files removed, empty folder
3. - Windows Installer 4.5 - Ah, doesn't look like it goes as far as Win 7....

    * Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista; Windows XP


I tried a download and install anyway (it tried to install and then came up with a "not compatible" message") - worth a go at this stage!.

I then had a rummage around in "User Account Control Settings" and turned them off (=never notify) on the strength of the description it had."Use for programs not certified for Win7 becuase they do not support User Account Controls"

Sadly with the same 1628 results.

Many thanks for the leads, any more greatfully accepted, in the meantime I think I'll go trawl some Win 7 forums to see if I can pick anything up.

Just a thought...
One of the things I haven't changed yet is the source file...do you think I am using the right downloaded V14 install file?

The full V14 and V15 file is over 500MB. This 99MB file is actually the update Pat is referring to and will not install by itself. You will have to install the file from your original download (or CD) then apply this 637 update.

I have installed V14 and V15 on several Win 7 PCs without any problem by using the campatibility mode from the start. I think you probnles are becasue it is not the full program.

Oops, looks like I'm using the wrong file then (I will of course find some way to blame Windows for this without admitting my own ineptitude  ).

In the meantime I'm off to rummage around on the old PC to see if I can find the original download (or failing that dig out the paperwork with the codes etc on it).

Found a CD where I had put the original download on (there's a 1st for me  ) - sods law struck and I've got "File creation error - data error (cyclic redundancy check). So duff file on the CD 

I've mailed the place I got it from (avanquest) on the offchance they will let me download a fresh copy - fingers crossed!

Many thanks for the for the guidance and kind offer in your PM.

Avanquest were very good and allowed me a further download of the software - which means I'll buy all my software from there in future (I like good service).

BINGO!!! Back in business!
Download and install the main program (500Mb)
Download and install the Extras file (260Mb)
Download and install the latest upgrade (99Mb) - This one needed a right click and "install as administrator"

Software wanted a "new" activation code as my old one wouldn't play (too old I guess), 1 click took me to somewhere on the IMSI site and a new code was autogenerated - very slick!


Just wanted to say a very big "thankyou" to both of you (Pat & Allan) for helping me get to a very happy outcome.
