Room Division

I'm obviously doing something wrong with Room Dividion, but I've tried everything and I can't make it work. I've inserted a division between two rooms and no matter how many different attems, whenever I apply a floor it fills both rooms.  I've tried running the division into the walls and also into the corners of the floor.  I tried picking the room by points.  No matter what I do, the two rooms act as one.

Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

There are a few traps with the Room Division tool.

First it really only works on an automatic floor. If the floor is automatically inserted (Settings/ Program Settings/ Building Aids) when you insert the walls, you can then draw a Room Division not connected to the walls but it must join to make an enclosed space. In 3D view you can then select the enclosed space and change the Appearance of that section or change the floor type.

If the walls are in place and the floor was not automatic, then you can divide the room from side to side and insert a separate floor in each side but if you want an enclosed space in the middle with a different floor or texture then you must join one edge of the enclosed section to the side wall, then insert you floor sections.

An alternative method is "brute force":

Add a "cube" (very thin; maybe .05") laid upon the floor (like a rug) and use whatever texture you desire.

You could use many different objects, some may offer more abilities to control shape such as curved sides....perhaps the outdoor landscaping tools may work indoors??

Unfortunately the landscaping Fill tool will only work on the Terrain.

You can get curves with the Room Divide tool if you want simply by right clicking the edge you want to curve, select Curve and then drag the central blue marker in the direction you want the curve to be.  If you do this before you insert the floors the floor edges will automatically follow the curve.  If the floors have been inserted already you can just select each floor in 3D and do the same thing but you will have to drag both floors to the same curve or you will have a hole in the floor (or it will overlap).

also, one could import a .3ds or .obj object from another source or even a .skp file from free Sketchup

Allan, good to know about landscaping tools not working "indoors"; I was not sure and had no time to test them.

Hi Doug,

Yes it is a shame the the landscape Fill only works on the terrain as it is ideal for creating two different surfaces of random shape. I suppose really the Room Division is not that different to the Fill tool but you can only use it that way on the Automatic Floor. If the floor is already there then the 'division' has to be connected to a wall which then causes a wall break.  Not a problem usually but the different sides of the break can sometimes render with slightly different tones. Once you have done the texture change you can delete the wall link, but it is just a copmplication that you don't have to worry about with the landscape Fill tool.

Hi Allan! I use a little trick then I insert a different type of floor in the same floor, whit the room Room Division tool I elevate the roof by 5 mm or 0.2" this work even you not use the automatic floor I use Floor by room this will not be seen in the render.

Hi Robert,

I think I must have missunderstood your method, as elevating the roof did not seem to make any difference. Maybe the order in which you do things makes it work differently.

I created four walls, inserted a ceiling and roof, raised the Support Height on the roof by 50mm, drew the Room Division without attaching it to a wall and inserted the Floor (By Room) - the floor still filled the whole floor, ignoring the Room Division. If I just connect a side of the Room Division to a wall, then it works OK (and it is easy to delete this join after inserting the floors), but that worked before, without elevating the roof.

Elevating the roof should not make any difference to the Room Division I would have thought but I know, at times, odd things can affect other things. However in this case it did not make any difference - or I did something different to you.  Maybe you will have to explain in more detail what you did.

Hi Allan! Sorry I men floor not roof I fill the area inside the room-division first after that floor by room and in 3d select the area of the room-division and elevate it 5 mm, but it work whit celing but you have to take away 5 mm from the the ceiling. As I have don in the image, I have put a mirror in the ceiling.

PS In Sweden  we use most of the time one word for ceiling and roof, and that is roof DS
