Complicated Roof (for me)

Thanks to everyone for the incredible tutorials!  I've leaned much, but I'm still having problems with the many roofs on this project. 

My first problem is the main/highest roof on the center of the house.  I'm trying to make three sides Gable but I'm not having any success.  I can make the front portion Gable but if I attempt to make the sides Gable, the front shoots to the sky.

My second problem is the Gambrel roof over the garage.  It goes two different ways, but I'm only able to create one direction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm sure they're simple fixes, I just can't seem to find the problems.  (I tried posting the .bld but it's too large.)

Hi and Welcome to the forum,

The roof is a very flexible tool and as such can be complex to get just what you want - but it can invariably do it! 

To get your three gables you must place two breaks in the edge of the roof, close to the corners, drag that section out a fraction and then change the three faces to gable.  Hopefully the image below will give all the directions you need.

The garage roof is probably the same principle but I have not actually tried it.

Jack has a video coming out soon that will cover all these sorts of things. In the meantime he may add some tips here if he has some refinements to what I have described.

Allan,  Thanks so much for sharing.  I was not able to get this to work on this particular project, but I tried it on a similar roof in a different project and it worked wonderfully, which leads me to wonder if I have other issues with this project. 

Would you consider allowing me to email you the .bld so you could have a look?  I appreciate your help!

Hi Matto,

I think you are going to run into troubles if you try creating the upper roof from the point your at now. You should start with a larger roof covering more area before you start breaking what you have.

It is conceivable that you could break and break and break until you get what you need but it will involve way too much editing and a great potential for roof errors to occur.

Hopefully Allan will get you a complete roof but I don't recommend a patch work roof in this case.

Hi Allan,

Try breaking and changing to gables without dragging the roof edges. It leaves a nicer corner IMO.

I have been flat out the last few days so hoping to have a look at your project tomorrow - very curious as to why you can't insert the breaks on this one when you can on others. 

Not sure about 'working  magic' though! Jack is the one who performs magic with roofs!
