Doing a project and needed more/different 3D rocks than TFP already has.

Did a Google search and found some.
(There used to be a free rock creation program; still looking in old folders to find it.)

But plenty of free models vis Sketchup here:

Anyone else have any good links to rock models with materials/textures?
(I can find lots of textures alone; so I don't need links to just texture maps/images.)

Hi Doug,

Try http://www.turbosquid.com/
The search is (sometimes) tricky --> search using different keywords (Rocks, Boulders, stones, etc) --> order by Lower Price -->  the free objects will show on top

Also, you can download this free "Stone rock meteorite boulder planet"package
http://artist-3d.com/free_3d_models/dnm/model_disp.php?uid=1895

Hope this helps

Thanks, I got a couple from TurboSquid.

Also found out that Google .skp files sometimes have a group of rocks in one scene....and to get individual rocks, open the group of rocks in SU, delete all but the one you want, save-as another .skp file

The .skp files import/worked just fine in TFP....but of course actual mesh models increase file size much more than a photoboard....but I suppose I could make them into photoboards if I needed to.

I also finally figured out how to import, and put into a new folder I named...you can drag n drop objects using the object manager window(I think that is the name) to move them in the catalog...need to because import and save to catalog won't let you pick exactly where to save object to.

I always import to scene, look at object, then save to catalog rather than save/import direct to catalog.

If you import direct to the Catalogue, there is no question where it goes - it goes exactly where you put it. You can create your own folders first if you want and put them directly into them. Much simpler process and if you do not like it, simply press the delete key. I find it much easier that way. Sometimes using the import wizard I would forget to to save it to the catalogue, then wanted to use it in another project and it was not there. Other times when I did save it to the catalouge I could not find it again. If I did find I then had to start shuffling it around in the Elements Manager to get it to where I wanted it. I found all of that was avoided by importing it direct into the folder I wanted - and if it wasn't what I wanted, or would not likely use in future projects, I just delete it.

As you said, the drag'n'drop of the Elements Manager is really good. So easy to move things to where you want them. I have all things I have customised or  use regularly in one folder at the top of each section of the Catalogue so I rarely have to scroll down. Then if I import something I just do it straight into that folder too.

When I can't find stuff, the "search" tool in catalog works well.

Must close/save a catalog once before a newly added item will be found by the search engine..after that it works well...so good to name stuff clearly and with a name that is memorable.
