How to stop exterior walls from protruding through the roof

I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to fix a simple problem.  I'm designing a simple rectangular single level garage with a 12/12 pitch roof.  I want to install a window on each gable end of the building.  I've seen posts that discuss installing exterior walls on the second level to accommodate the window installation.  I've done this and used the auto extend feature for the walls.  However, my walls don't auto extend to the roof ridge.  The walls stay rectangular and protrude through the roof.  What am I doing wrong.  Help!!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The roof must be on the same location as the walls for the autoextend to work. The other posts you mention on the subject, probably related to an attic ROOM. In this case there is an upper floor and the wall is kept tiny, set to autoextend so it flows into the gable and the window is inserted in this tiny wall. It sounds as though this is what you may have done. If so it would have worked but only if you installed the roof on the same location as these tiny walls.

I get the impression however, that in your case, there is no upper floor as such - simply windows in the gables. Is this right? If this is the case you do not need to have an upper floor with tiny walls.  If there is no second floor, and your roof is inserted on the Ground floor, then you can delete everything on the upper floor. You can then insert the windows in the ground floor wall (make sure the ground floor walls are set to autoextend) and simply select the inserted windows, right click, select Elevate and enter the correct height from the floor to the TOP of the window.

Hopefully one of these two options will fix your problem.

Allan's "elevate" approach works well.
Where I ran in to trouble with it was that the was another window directly underneath the gable window and so it was not possible to draw the gable window in the 2d plan prior to elevating it.
I see that you may have a similar situation.
I solved this with a hack by creating a new location specially for the gable window, even though there was no attic room.
Specify the height of that location to where you want the gable window to be.
Then draw a short interior wall just behind the skin of the siding who's length is less than the width of the gable at that height.
Finally draw the window into the gable.

Actually is is possible to put one window above another.  The easest way is to insert the Gable window first, right click and elevate it - then you can just insert the second window at the normal height in the 3D view or Elevation view (you do not have to be in plan view to insert windows and doors).

Alternatively if you already have the lower window in the wall, you can just move it sideways (if there is room obviously) and then insert the gable window and eleveate it and then just move the lower window back into place. You can also insert the gable window alongside the other and elevate it (even if it protrudes through the roof ) and then move it across into the centre of the gable.

I can now eliminate the location that holds the hack wall I mentioned.
I didn't know that you could insert building features in the 3d or elevation view.
