Drawing Simple 2D Floor Plans

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and new to the program. I purchased version 12 because I want to get into drawing floorplan sketches for listing agents as a small side business. I opened the program and quickly realized that it is really geared towards much more sophisticated work (maybe the 3D in the title should have tipped me off).

But what I'm still wondering is if there is a way that the program can just do simple floor plan drawings with thick lines for outer walls and thin line for inner walls, room labeling, furniture layouts and square footage calculations that are easily visible?

Any help would be appreaciated.

Hi and wlcome to the forum!

No problem at all - TFP will do all of that and as a bonus you can see it all automatically in 3D, with live walkthroughs etc with no extra work!!! 

To answer your specific questions:

How the wall is displayed is found in the Wall Properties. You will see an option on the Appearance tab called Solid Fill. If you tick this on in the 2D section (bottom items in the list on the left) the wall is then defined and will display and print as a sold wall but it must be activated in Settings / Program Settings / Building Aids.  If you did not want it filled solid, then set the Line Style thickness in Wall Properties instead and turn on Show Line Weights in Settings / Program Settings / Workspace. Tick this also in the Print dialog if you want the Line Weights to print.

For inner walls leave the solid fill unticked in the Wall Properties or use a finer line weight.

There is Text option for room labelling etc on the Layout toolbar (may be turned off) or you can use Tools / Analyse / Schedules for room names and automatic area/perimeter/cublic capacity etc.

Furniture is on the Interior toolbar or Insert / Interiors.

Don't forget to right click and double click things to see all the options.

Did you try the House Builder Wizard? --> Insert --> Design Wizard --> House Builder.
IMO, it is an easy way to start

I too have purchased flooplan looking for a simple 2D house plan and a simple 2D block layout.  I bought Version 9 some years ago and did not use it much. Now I have the Aus / NZ version 16.  I did the tutorial and achieved the sample OK, but like the original author of this post I wanted filled lines for the external walls.  In my so far unsuccessful quest, I seem to have upset a drawing default.  When I draw say a 240mm veneer wall, it traces along OK, but when I click, the black trace disappears into a vague yellow line. Some of the wall elements are still behaving OK.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Modification to post:- I have installed the program on another computer to test the default and find that the 230mm and 240mm veneer walls behave the same way on the other computer.   I still have not achieved the filled lines and why does the drawing behave this way ?

Any help appreciated.

Hi Barbara and welcome to the forum.

First if all it sounds as though the line colour for the wall you are using is set to yellow. As you draw it will be black but when finished it will show the 2D wall line colour selected for that wall.

Go to the wall Properties, Appearance tab and click on each of the 2D parts of the wall (Exterior, Interior left and right etc). Each has a 3D appearance and a 2D appearance or line style. Click the Line Style to change the colour and thickness etc. Changing this in the plan will only change the plan wall. If you want to change it for all future walls, you need to change it in the Catalogue (right click the wall in the Catalogue and select Edit element).

While you are there tick the Solid Fill for each part of the wall you want solid (Exterior Veneer, Cavity, Core (Interior part)) and that part of the wall will be solid black or other colour if you change it but it will only appear on the plan that way if you enable the Solid Fill globally by ticking the box in Settings. Study the images in my first reply in this post. You must have missed one of the two steps if the solid fill is not working for you.
