Soffit and Fascia Line-up

I have been struggling to line-up my soffit and fascia.  Primarily on hip roofs, for example, when a 4/12 runs into a 6/12, the soffit and fascia will not line up. When I adjust the roof dimensions the soffit and fascia wants to miss align.  I have also tried a full render and this did not correct the problem.

I attached some pictures of an inside corner with a 6/12 meeting a 4/12.  Note the fascia angling off, and below the soffit is not showing up.

Any thoughts or tricks :-\

Sincerely
Jeff

Jeff,

That does seem to be an issue. You can sort of trick it by extending the overhang but the join is still not good. Easy fix is to put the different pitch roof on a new Location and draw it by Picking Points.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for getting back to me! :)

I tried what you had suggested, and it worked good on lining up the soffit and fascia. It does seem like something is happening to the main roof.  Are the roofs suppose to blend  when you move then together?  A notch on the exterior wall is showing up.  See attached.  I tried using solution type and nothing happens....but I am not sure if I am using the command correctly.

On a side note, this is a project that I was working on earlier, posted Rotate Window. I tried rendering the project and the render freezes with a error, RENDERER: FILE PARSE ERROR FILE:OBJ_2731-4.0.ent  not sure what the error meant, so I decided to redraw this project (needed the practice anyway).  I figure the error was coming from all the specialty Items I was inserting.  Which brings me to the soffit and fascia snag.

Hope I'm not to far off!

Sincerely

Jeff

Jeff,

The two roofs do not blend - they only look as though they do in 3D.  It is essential to make sure the edges line up to exactly so you do not see the join on the facia for example. Zoom in extremely close and use the Nudge tool set to 1 mm (or fraction of an inch) to align the two. The notch in the wall does not appear to be related to the second roof as I assume you do not have any walls on the 'roof' location - the two do not interact anyway (or are certainly not supposed to!). I have never seen and interaction between locations (in 10 years or more) but I seem to recall there have been reports of it. Maybe we need to see the BLD file to identify this one.

The render error message means nothing to me either.  Did you have Hardware Acceleration on? Neither of my PCs will render with HA on. I must turn it off for rendering. (Settings/Program Settings/Graphics). Hopefully that is all the problem is.

Hi Allan,

I attached a bld file of the soffit and fascia drawing...the soffit and fascia lines up nice...but the notched walls still puzzle me!

Yes, I did have the hardware Acceleration on.  I tried turning it off and re-rendered and the same error still appears.  I attached a bld file of this drawing also!

Thank you Allan for your help!

Sincerely

Jeff Bean

The Borth Lake Redo file is the soffit and fascia problem.
The Borth Lake Home is the render problem.

Allan Chesney

Jeff,

I have had a look at your models and no real answers yet.

I can see why there is a gap in the walls - the area is where the soffit for the larger roof is - so the program is saying 'because there is a soffit here I don't need to extend the wall to the roof. The problem is the roof sitting 6" or so above the walls, forcing the walls to extend to the roof - in 3D click on the wall - it is about 6" short of the roof, the gap being filled by the Auto Extend. Turn off Auto Extend (Click Level) and the roof is floating above the walls.  The Auto Extend is for filling interior walls where you have a Cathedral Ceiling and should not normally have to work on exterior walls except for gable ends. It is happening in this case because your main roof is not going to the front wall but stops at the recessed one. Because the overhang extends BELOW the level of the roof it seems to be lifting the whole roof to accomodate the overhang. If you insert a roof right to the extreme edges of the wall it is OK but lifts as soon as you drag the roof edge in a bit. This does not happen on a new model ,so I don't see why yours is doing this - I must be missing something - hopefully someone else will see what it is.

The simplest solution, unless someone else finds the cause of the roof lifting, is to insert the roof on its own location to remove the wall interaction (you may have to make the roof location a bit lower - 9' maybe). I would also put the second roof (different pitch) on another location again. If they are on the same location they can sometimes snap into each other.

The render issue occurs on both of my PC's also (on Advanced - Basic is OK). The file it is complaining about is one involved in the lighting process. I will see if I can find something out about it.  Your 'Redo' model does not cause the error, so it would appear there is something odd in the original.  I tried a Repair but it crashed when I tried to render after that. One of the lights at the garage is very bright - Had to set both down to 5 watts as they were brighter than the sunlight. (There is a known problem here - they are working on it).  I tried deleting your diamond window but it was not the problem either.

I don't know if I have been much help but maybe a little.

The Borth Lake Redo file is the soffit and fascia problem.

The roof/ceiling is higher than the wall height...and because you have 2 roofs in same place TFP can't resolve.  There may be another method with using auto roofs but easy to just change wall from auto to level and height to 9' (was 8')

I opened the file and did nothing except to do adv render and got parse error

which means you have a bad object/line somewhere in the construct

Suggest you piecemeal remove the most questionable objects first until you find the offending item...stray wall, imported object or material, etc.

Allan Chesney

I wondered whether the background image may be the cause - I could not replace it - the program crashed when I did try.

Good Morning Allan and Doug,

I see what you mean on the wall heights on the soffit and fascia issue.  By turning the auto extend off and adjusting the wall height seems like a good fix.

On the render error, It could very well be something I did.  Especially if the same error is showing up for you guys.  I do know the rotated diamond window, the wall segments above the diamond window, stone half columns, and the angled porch brackets are all items I created in turbo cad 11.2 and transfered to TFP.  I'll give it a try removing them one at a time!

Sure do appreciate your help guys,
Have a great day!

Sincerely,
Jeff Bean

Jeff,

The imported objects should really be OK but try it. Most common cause is a bad wall join. Zoom in close on them looking for any odd connections.

Good Morning Allan,

That could be a good possibility.....I do have some walls that are butt together and are different heights...One in particular the right exterior wall. (as you look at the rotated window)

When you break a wall, one segment is a different wall height then the other.  I needed to adjust were the break was by stretching the wall...should the walls at the break continue to heal together..or will the break always be there?

Sincerely,

Jeff Bean

Allan Chesney

Jeff,

The break should stay but I dont think that would be a problem. Bad wall intersections, or un-intentional nibs sticking out are the usual causes.

Zoom in really close on the intersections, select each wall and there would normally be a clean triangle in the middle of the join. If not, try dragging the end of the joining wall right through and then delete the bit sticking out the other side. This will usually fix it.

Hi Allan,

Funny you should mention this! :D  I am currently working on another plan were I came across the same problem, with the intersections and corners not meeting correctly.  And I did just what you said. Run the walls past and erase the segment....I'll put it to the test and go over my (rotated window) plan!

I want to tell you how much help you guy's have been.....It has help me keep my projects moving forward!

Thanks Again,

Jeff Bean
