TFP thinks it's a background process?

Morning tests and things:

- turn on computer, no TFP showing in Task Manager
- push garbage / recycling to back lane
- right-click TFP and "run as administrator" (I already do but with Windows, who knows)
- TFP launches as background process, end task and do cold reboot
- get some coffee
- change properties of TFP desktop shortcut to run in compatability mode for Windows 7
- click on quick launch shortcut by accident, TFP launches background, end task, another cold reboot
- DRINK the coffee!
- click on compatability mode shortcut, windows pop-up asking if program can make changes, click okay
- TFP launches as background process
- grab cat before he can walk on power button and kick him out of room
- use Task Manager to close TFP, then reopen in compatability mode, launches, renders etc properly
- exit normally, check TFP OS compatability on-line, another cold reboot
- open door and go wake son for school, no TFP showing in Task Manager
- change compatability to windows XP SP3
- click, get windows pop-up, click OK,TFP in background processes
- use Task Manager to end task, windows "Compatability Assistant" pops up, let it give suggestion, it recommends windows 7 so I close and ignore it
- cat succeeds in standing on power button turning off computer
- get more coffee then CLOSE cat-proof door
- start computer, change compatability to Vista SP2, TFP launches as background, end task, launches and runs normally the second time
- give up for today, turn off compatability, cold restart, back to where I started

The only other thing I can think of is that I did NOT have this problem when running the trial version. After purchasing I uninstalled the trial before installing licensed version, though I know that's not really necessary.  The trial hadn't expired yet, any chance the "check for expiry" bit of programming is causing this? That might have run in background processes, though I (and Norton) checked every start-up / background process listed or running and none are unexplained or TFP related (unless its running, of course).

Hi Abhann,

Usually, if you installed a TFP program and you deleted it, in order to reinstall the program,  it is necessary to perform a clean installation to avoid interferences or debris from the other version. In the past, Imsi had a link for the "clean install" instructions, but I just checked and the link doesn't work 
(Allan: it will be great if Imsi could set the page again)
Anyway, I'd suggest to uninstall your current version (if you customized the catalog, save it) --> clean the computer, clean the registry, check the drivers, run Spybot, etc
Then install the program as Administrator --> Note that this is not "Run as Administrator", but "Install as administrator" --> In order to do this, you must Log On as Admistrator

Hi Abhann,

I had an issue installing Windows 8, avg was interfering with the install and I was unable to get rid of avg (I had tried when using Windows 7 to no avail).

I went online to Microsoft and first started a chat helpline. The gal called me and I gave her control of my computer remotely. It took her over 2 hours of tedious work to get rid of avg and get me back to full install of Windows 8. Apparently there is no charge for a while after installing Windows 8.

I highly recommend the MSoft  Support, they were fantastic with my problem.

I think you use "Action Center" link on the right. You can call or chat (or both).
I was able to use my Samsung Slate to Chat while they worked on my main computer install problem. It seems like it would be worth investigating.

Hi Everyone!

Sorry it was so long before I replied again, it's been an insane couple of months.  I haven't even had time for TFP!

Weird news: Today went to start TFP and IT STARTED! First time!  Apparently my weird glitch has disappeared, though I'll be more sure of that if it starts tomorrow.

Haven't been using TFP and didn't have time to try any of your suggestions so not sure what happened.  Possibly the regular windows updates fixed something.  I haven't updated video drivers or  anything but I did add some .net framework and C++ stuff, update java (several times and ways), not much else I can think of.

System crashed, rebooted and tried TFP, same problem.

Now I get to try out all of the advice
