gable roof error invalid forced gable created

Hello,  I cannot seem to draw a simple 4 sided gable roof.

I am using TFP12 home & landscape pro  windows xp

Error Message reads:  Invalid Forced gable created. the fascia distance is lower than the adjacent surface. reverting to old values.

Every time I go to change a simple roof from a hip to 4 gables I get this error message with one or more of the gables. I am drawing a 12' x 22' garage and want to put this gable roof style on it. The walls are 10' tall. I am putting a gable on the front and back walls ( 12' wide walls ). On the side walls, I am breaking the roof symetrically 5'6" on both ends , which gives me a center gable of 11' at the wall. It is so simple but the program will not draw the gables.

This is happening when I am drawing the roof overhang at 1" There seems to be a conflict with the fascia and gable eave end  meeting properly.

When at a 1' overhang the sloped roof sections to the left and right of the gable are continuing straight down and not merging with the gable eaves. Is there a way to reconfigure or set the way the roof looks at this intersection so that the eaves are not sticking inside of the part of the gable? 

I posted 2 drawings. If you open it up try to put a gable on the walls that are not gabled. The one side wall already has breaks in it.

Could someone PLEASE help me resolve this? I need to get these drawings done.

Welcome to the Forum!

When you look at the two sides of the roof where you have the breaks, they are different.  The one that has worked has a double break (two slight doglegs in the edge) and this is needed to form the gable properly.  The other side just has two breaks and no doglegs.

The easiest way to get 4 gables as you want, is to insert the first roof with your gables on the shart walls.  To get the side gables just draw another roof over the top of the first but do this by selecting "Roof By Picking Points". This second roof over the top of the first one, will break the roof correctly giving the right type of breaks to enable you to form the gables. Click the two ends that you want to be gables (arrows turn green) and select Gable. If necessary, drag the side gable edges in or out to make the dogleg very small so that the edges of the facia line up or set the eaves of the gable slightly smaller to line them up.

I am afraid you lost me a little with the 1" and 1' overhangs but hopefully the solution above will get you on the right track with the roof.

Hi Allen,  Thanks for the tips.

I am able to make it work with a roof overhang of 1'.  However, when I try to do the drawing with the same technique with a 1" or 2" overhang it still shows the same error message. The second roof , when selecting points comes up with one side wall and one end wall with 2" overhangs and the other two walls with a 1' overhang.
I am actually trying to draw this roof with a one or two inch overhang because the garage will be built on a property line with what is called a zero lot line. The main house also is built with just a 1x trim over stucco. I will for now just keep the overhang at 1' so I can get the preliminary designs out of the way. I would sure like to be able to draw this correctly. I have no other issues other than this gable problem. I have older versions of these types of programs and have not run into this problem before. My oldest program draws the 4 gables with no glitches. I am mainly using this program to get the plans almost complete and then export them to autocad for the final set of plans. I really like the speed of this program.

Hi John,

I had no problem setting the overhang right down to 1mm (1/16th inch).  Not sure how you are doing it but all I did was the following:

1.  Inserted 4 walls, added Roof by Perimeter and set the two ends to gable.
2.  Inserted another Roof by Picking Points across the first, sticking out both sides, to make the side gables.
3.  Zoom in on one of the ends of the 'second' roof and drag the edge in so it was almost in line with the first roof (just a tiny, tiny dogleg of 1mm or so).
4.  Zoom out so you can see the whole wall, select the roof again and click each of the 5 arrows on that side so they are all green.
5.  Go to Roof Properties and change the overhang to 1" (or whatever)
6.  Deselect the roof and select just the centre edge of the roof (the part you want to be a gable) and change it to Gable.  Make sure in this case that only one of the arrows is green.

Hopefully that will work for you.

I thought it was interesting that you are able to build to the boundary like this.  In Australia we have to have a full wall on the boundary that goes above the roof, so the is no possibility for rain water to run off onto the adjoining property.

I will try it the way you described.

As for zero property line setbacks, we are allowed, where I live, to build this type of structure and the city has no issues with rain water flows. Sacramento, California does not get the types of rainfall that would make this a big issue.

Hi Allen,

I am still stuck on this gable problem. I have tried so many different ways to try to get these gables to work it is driving me crazy. When I insert a second roof, the first one is no longer there. It acts as if I have started over. Could you please explain how to retain the first roof and have the second one as an  overlay? Or is this possible?

Hi John,

I do not understand why the initial roof is disappearing. Are you using the instructions in my last post or some previous ones?

Just now I have started a new project and followed my previous instructions and it worked perfectly. It is all done on the one location.
Insert the first roof (By Perimeter) then the second (by Picking Points). Start drawing it well outside the first roof and then drag it in later.  It should automatically meld with the original roof.

When you said to insert another roof, I was re-drawing a wider roof around the perimeter of the entire roof. Now I understand what you were trying to get at.
