how do i tell turbo 12 that on some parts of the roof- NO eaves!

i think that is the problem. where the 12 foot foyer is, the main roof should come up to it but not have eaves!
i think they stick thru the 8 foot walls.
for the 3rd pic i made the top roof a different colour - just to make it clear
i suspect that the top roof should join onto the main roof. see actual pic

Hi Rick,

I am away from home so can't look at you actual model at the moment but the answer to your question about the eaves is: Select the roof, click on the edges of the roof you want to have no eaves so the arrow turns green and make sure all the others are red, right click and in the roof Properties change the Overhang to 0 ( or 1 if it wont accept zero).

There should not be any need to make a 3DS roof - from the photo it looks very simple. From what I can see by the images it looks as though the edges of the main roof- presumably the ones sticking through the walls, need to be changed to Gables. This will raise that roof up to a straight hip roof and your red roof will join into it as I presume it should.

Unless someone else looks at this before, I will have a look at your model when I get home (12+ hours)

I would completely agree with Allan.
The lower hip roof is a rain disaster waiting to happen . . . i.e. the roof drains into the house and will, in time, leak.

Roofs are almost never designed that way . . . for the obvious leak problem. And the solution is to make the hip roof next to second story a gable so it drains away from the house.  It may join the upper roof but does not have to; depends on the roof slopes and wall heights.

one problem guys - that iS how the house is built!
at least the sides of the 12 foot part are clearly visible. a triangle shape
i assume the back joins the rest of the roof.

Hi Rick,

The photo certainly helps and what I said before I think is still the answer. The  raised section  on  second location and set each edge of the main roof around this 'entry room' set to  Gables with zero or mini eaves.

It the wall heights of tbe two locatons are set correctly in Building Locations and the slope of the roof is correct tben you should not need to raise the roof.

Haven't looked at the model yet sorry - just got home and it is midnight. Will try tomorrow.

Easiest way, typically, is to increase the slope until it looks correct. Increase all or some depending on what design you want.

You can make the first floor walls taller but that may not match what you want.

how do i make the slope of the main roof right so the gap between the back of the raised portion joins the main roof
the eaves are still a problem. on the left they have to be there on the garage part up to the posts - but not from there - is this doable?

Hi Rick,

Obviously the house already exists since you presumably posted a Google Maps view of it. If this is the case I  would suggest that you check the wall height of the main part of the house,  the 'entry' and the pitch of the roof because if you have these correct by the actual building, then it should join up correctly.

You need to set the wall height in Building Locations as that  controls where the roof sits. The walls themselves should be set to AutoExtend to the roof. The pitch of the roof is set in Roof Properties for each edge that is Hip while the 'cut out' around the Entry should be set to Gable.

You need the outside wall height since the inside is only to the ceiling.

The eaves can be set any length down to zero or just a fraction in some cases.

You can have different eaves on every edge of the roof if you want. When you select the roof one edge will have a green arrow the others red. The green one is the one you can edit. You can select several if you want.
