included is a vers 12 bld file
and the front arched window needs to be bigger height
thanks
Normally walls of different heights are put on different Building Locations and the Building Location wall height set accordingly. You then insert the roof on that location. The simplest way to insert the roof without it affecting the existing roof is to create a new location based on the existing Ground Floor but with the wall height and ceiling height set to whatever the high part is, then insert the roof on that location - it will insert the roof at the wall height. Technically the high walls would probably be best on that location too but you will probably get away with having just the roof on the high location. You will have to make the peice of wall at the sides (that you have elevated) into a complete 'room' otherwise you will find the side walls will render black on Advanced Render (Basic may be OK). You can use the Room Divide tool to make an invisible wall on the inside to make a complete 'room'. The walls will then take on the Exterior texture and render correctly.
The height of the arched window can be changed by adjusting 'd - Right Side' - Both sides will change.
Allan
we are getting somewhere.
i got a roof on the high bit - somewhat anyway.
how do i make a hole in the old roof?
UPDATE*** i deleted the old roof and put in a new one
than foyer/room is 12 ft high inside!
this sure is a drafty house - the walls do not join!
and when i try to make the upper roof wider the front wall goes wider too!
HELP!!!!
thanks
If you look at my previous post you will notice I suggested putting the roof on a new Building Location (Settings Menu - see image). If you do that the roof will insert automatically on the higher walls (12' I presume) without interaction with the main roof.
From your previous post - If you do need to cut the roof out anytime right click and select Cut Opening.
Obviously you need to drag the walls together so that they join - that will reduce the drafts!!
Allan
sorry allan, still don't get it!
in 12 where do i get that screen that you show?

Look at the extream bottom left, click on the picture of the house.

thanks
found it, but it wont let me put in a wall! all greyed out.
Did you click the Add Location button?
Allan
I clicked the add location button and the numbers are in the form.
but when i open that 'floor' the add walls etc is greyed out
thanks
Hi! I have looking at your drawing and I found out that you have a lot of inversible walls, I think if you delet them and come back to them later, if I not wrong abut it you have this walls to split the floor so you can have diffrent mtrl. on the floor.
My suggestion is you change the foyer floor higt 96" and wallhights 48" this will cut a hole aoutmatic in the main roof on the same time you got a real room so the ext. walls will be correct. On this wall delete all trims, and the floor.
You have to draw the corspending walls on the groundfloor, but with the same higt as the rest of your building 96".
Robert
thanks
standing at the door, the far wall and the right side wall are 8 ft off of the ground, and 4 ft high. total 12 '
don't remember any invisiable walls

when i open that 'floor' the add walls etc is greyed out.
When you open another floor, all the elements inserted on other floors are greyed out. As soon as you draw something on this floor it will be in the normal colour. If everthing on other floors was in full colour, it would be almost impossible to work with, especially if you had many storeys, it would be very confusing trying to work out which floor was which.
On the Foyer floor all you need to draw is the roof (insert By Picking Points) so that it matches the walls of your foyer - this will then appear to sit on your exisiting foyer walls. HOWEVER:....
Following Robert's comments about invisible walls and your comment about it "being drafty" I looked a bit closer at the foyer and it has many issues. I would agree with Robert's suggestion that you delete ALL the invisible walls (room dividers). They do not appear to be doing anything but they are probably causing many problems with the existing walls, as some are in the same place as a regular wall (so inside it) and this may be even making some of the walls vanish. You will have to zoom in close on plan view and search around as there are many long and small pieces all over the place. They show up as black broken lines on the plan, (zoom in close). Turn off the floor and Terrain and you will see them easier.
The foyer walls also have many bad joins and broken segments, so I would suggest that they be all redone after deleting the invisible walls and use two locations to get the height (96" for the existing Ground Floor and 48" for the Foyer location as Robert suggested). If the walls is supposed to be 12' inside, then the Foyer location's "floor height" should be 108" (96" + 12" for the ground floor thickness).
To redo the foyer, delete all the existing walls that make it up, then extend the existing walls from the four corners to make the new foyer walls.
Once you have them connected on each corner, shift-select each of the walls that make up the 4 sides of the foyer only, right click and select 'Duplicate to Locations' and select the new Foyer location. That will copy the four walls to the Foyer location and they will be exactly aligned and appear as single wall. As Robert said - turn off the Trim on the upper part of the walls (Foyer Location) and turn off the Drop Face too (set it to zero) or it will overlap the lower part of the wall and may cause texture rendering problems. These upper walls (Foyer location) should also be set to Extend to Roof so they will stop at the roof when it is inserted on the Foyer location.
I noticed too that some parts of the building the floors do not meet correctly or overlap (which will give a two texture conflict). Some of these things may not seem relevent, as I seem to recall that you were mainly interested in the garden, but they MAY cause issues for you when you try to render photorealistic images later.
Hope you can follow all of that and that it makes sense. Ask again if anything is not clear.
Allan
Hi anon
I have done one example what I mean below. Total height of the foyer is 12'.
edit this post.
Then I read some of Allan's comments in the post below, I think that I have to clarifying my post below .
That is why I have set floor level to 96" on the Foyer Location. To get a smooth over gang from the ground level wall and foyer you shall not have any floor at foyer location. You have also to set " Drop Exterior Face to 0" after you have draw the walls for the foyer, if not this drop will interference with the walls below, this will not look nice.
/Robert
thanks guys
also on the left as you enter the house there is one wall above the other!
there is a short 4ft high wall then the 4ft wall elevated 8ft to the ceiling.
okay thanks guys - i am getting somewhere.
why is the main roof sticking into the foyer?
thanks
another little problem
it wont let me join the raised wall on the right - to the front. always adds another bit.
then it LOOKS like it does not fit - when looking from the outside.
i can live with it - but...
The roof is protruding into the foyer bacause the overhang is set to 12". This will have to be set to a fraction of an inch and the roof alignment positioned accurately. You also need to follow Roberts images to change the edges of this cut out to gable so that the roof slopes the right way around the foyer.
The problem with the raised wall at the front is caused by the room divide 'invisible walls' that are still there. The image below will explain about these. These must all be deleted before you attempt any further edits or you will continue to have problems. The image only show the ones near this corner of the foyer but there are others elsewhere also. The invisible wall appears to go right around the room on the right and through it too. When you delete this you must get all the bit that are left each side (and inside) any walls that the invisible wall crosses. Even the tiny bits (eg the one marked by '1' on the image) must be deleted. It is this tiny fragment that is causing your upper wall to break and the lower one also. When you move the mouse on the the Invisible Wall you should get a little popup that says "Wall Surfaces". I think that was there in V12 but on V15 it also says the floor level too. Make sure you get that before you click especially if you are trying to delete bits where it crosses another wall. It will always be a single line as it has no depth.
These upper and lower walls also are not in line (they may not be supposed to be but look as though they should be. The upper one is also slighly crooked (not at right angles) Turn Ortho on the status bar on to ensure right angles when drawing walls.
I noticed too that the floors do not align with the walls so you will possibly have gaps around the edges (no good if there are mice in your area!!)
It is good to zoom in close on the plan like this to really see if there are problems, especially if you draw by Picking Points.
Allan
thanks
oops!
i got rid of that invisible wall thanks
but the wall looks 'crooked' from the plan 2d view.
how do i make sure walls are straight?
i still don't understand the roof thing - yes i am a bit slow!
i can make the overhang .1 or something but it wont overhange the side of the garage then!
AHA it is NOT the .1 that is the problem.
to have the eaves at the side of the garage i need to place in NOT accurate as far as the foyer goes.
maybe a ceiling will hide it.
AHA again! I split the roof so it sticks out over the side of the garage.
thanks all- the foyer aint perfect but it will have to do.
thanks for your patience! both of you!

You cannot straighten a wall that already exists - you would need to redraw it. Best way, as mentioned in the previous reply, is to turn Ortho ON (Status bar). You can then only place things, draw walls etc at right angles. Turn if off again for angled walls.

the foyer aint perfect but it will have to do.
If you do decide later to proceed to sort the foyer out properly, it may be better to restart that part of the house. It would probably be easier than trying to fix it, as there are still a number of issues (raising walls for example can be a problem as it breakes the wall below it - causes mitred angles etc on the lower walls that are joined to the raised bit). Before you start to redo it ask for the best way to go about it at the time.

tried driving out of the garage. wow lots of damage to the car.
cos the driveway is a foot below the garage door!
same for the front door.
do i select everything and elevate it minus 12inches
fills and paths are at terrain level - i think.
thanks for all your help.
How do i get the roof over the front window to be like in the picture.
steeper yes - what else?
thanks all
PS still finding those invisible walls!
Hi again,

tried driving out of the garage. wow lots of damage to the car.
cos the driveway is a foot below the garage door!
same for the front door.
The problem arises becasue you have the Floor Level of the Ground Floor Location set to 12" (which is the default setting). It assumes you have a floor that is 12" thick and it sits on the Terrain which is 0". Because you have your garage at the same 12" level you end up with a drop to the terrain from the door and garage.
So some questions:
What is the height of the floor above the ground (terrain)? Presumably at the front door there is a step of some sort. On the photo there appears to be a small step so maybe the floor level should have been say 4" (1 brick?).
What is the level of the garage floor compared to the house? If the garage has a lower level it should have been on a separate location (with a floor level of zero maybe?). Or is the garage and house floor the same but the drive slopes up to the garage slightly? That is the usual situation.
Fills and paths are at Terrain level as you said but there are a number of ways to solve this problem, depending on the circumstances:
1. Dearest option: Buy a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle and dispose of the wreaked car! (and build a step at the front door!)
2. Cheapest (easiest) option: Raise the Terrain (Settings / Programme Settings/ Terrain)
3. Difficult Option: Lower all the locations to the true height of the floor above the ground (4"?) You must alter all locations - they will all move down accordingly. That will give you a 4" drop from the garage (you don't need the 4WD for that - as long as you do not drive in too fast!)
4. Ugly option: Make the drive 12" thick. (Extra concrete costs and make sure you do not trip off the edge of it !)
5. Slope Option 1: Use the Stairs - Ramp tool, to make a gently slope up to the garage. (No site works required!)
6. Slope Option 2: Use the Surfaces tool to make a gentle slope (moderate difficulty but no site works charges)
7. Slope Option 3 (probably most difficult): Use the Terrain slope tool to make a negative slope of the whole terrain away from the house. (extensive site works required and hence costly - not as much as 4WD though!)
8. Most Difficult (but probably the correct way): Make a new Location for the garage with a floor level of 0 (or 1" - whatever it is), wall height set to make the top of it the same as the rest of the house (so if you make the Garage floor 1" then the wall height would be 11" higher than they were).
Then the problems start: In Plan view select all the Garage walls and right click Duplicate to Locations (Garage) then delete them from the Ground floor. You have to make sure that exterior walls on the ground floor are still connected so they adopt the exterior texture and sometimes invisible walls are needed to make these continuous. (This option is costly in time and money - demolition and reconstruction and you know what contractors are like these days!)
My suggestion - option 2 or 5 (or a combination).

Is the roof actually steeper? Is it the roof overhang that is longer?
Allan
WOW!!!!!! thanks again
i will work on the first steps.
this house is in a retirement area so no steps above 4inches.
garage is at ground level of course.
the ramp tool lets me change everything - except what i need - the length!
"Use the Surfaces tool to make a gentle slope " where is it!!!
roof. the top roof is joined to the main roof- the main roof is higher.
so i think a much steeper angle will be required.
also the shape of the roof is different than the picture.
the foyer goes into the slope of the main roof.
thanks again
Hi Anon! If you look at my post with the roof yo will get your anserw to the roof ther. The Ramps, that I have to look at I com to same result as you, but I think you have to use a custom straight ramp, with segments.

sorry robban- still don't get it!ps
plans says roof slope is 8/12

"Use the Surfaces tool to make a gentle slope " where is it!!!
The height of the ramp is set on the Basic tab (4" atthe garage door). On the Layout tab you set the degrees of slope. This will automatically set the length to give you that degree of slope to finish at 4" high.
The Surfaces tool is on the toolbar right next to the Roof tool - it is much harder to use than the ramp!

I have made some more images for you Foyer2b, 2c, and 2d.
Follow step 1 to 6 there after follow image Foyer3 the result shall be something like step 7 in image Foyer 2d.
Step E and F in Foyer3 is necessary if for the result if you not shall us a attic.
This will work with all slops of the roof no matter if it 4/12, 6/12 or 8/12 or something else.
If you don't understand be free to ask again.
thanks
maybe i a missing something.
the main roof to the right of the foyer the problem.
i need it to be as in top pic - not as in your bottom pic
see my pic of the house.

Now Have I look more in to details, will my suggestion to that export a 2d image that drawing you have now, then import it to a new drawing.
Before you import it to new drawing you have to Unmarked automatic floor in settings and set the location right, If you not have any basement on the house skip Foundation,
Setting for Location
(Ground Floor) Floor level to 4" Head Height to ceiling to 96" walls to 96", ad a new location Foyer Floor level 4"+96"=100" Head height to 40" Ceiling Height to 48" Wall Height 48", this will give you a foyer with high to the ceiling = 144".
Import your drawing as a traced image then trace the image one location at the time.
Begin with the external walls, then interior walls use full height walls no special walls. Places there are an opening between rooms use Openings this can you adjust. so you only draw full height walls. Now you can ad floors by room, if you will use 2 different mtrl. on the floor can you use room divider this is the only time you need to use it in this project. Now it is time for Foyer location and this fast to do this is only 4 small walls nothing more the only thing more on this location is roof and ceiling maybe some lighting..
Select the ground Level and to every thing in this level even the window over the entry door. Then you will add the roof follow my images Foyer 2B to Foyer 3.
/Robert
thanks but but but....
I only need the main roof to be the same shape as it is in the picture of the house!
no 2d pics needed for that!
Hi annon! That's total OK so I will draw the outlin then creat the roof and we will see if that you ar looking for, but I'm sorry to say I cant upload the bld fil to you, my version is TFP15 look below so it will be a screendump. That I draw befor was only an example.
Robert
thanks VERY much
these google pics should help!
Hi Anon!
I don't think that I can tell exact what I'm done, but in big turn have I used 3 different roof you can see it on image 2 to the garage have I used nearly the same technique that i used to the foyer roof.
I have redraw your drawing by help of Location and View filter. In your case have I select ground floor and duplicated to new level that I named to rev 1 with ground level at -96" this is a way to redo whit out delete you work, then I did a new location ground-floor-new whit floor-level at 4" and one Foyer location whit floor-level at 100" wall height 48" . The only thing I had to redraw was walls and doors and windows, all other items was only to duplicate from rev1 to ground-floor-new, the then I was finish the only I have to do was to delete rev1 , the old ground floor had I deleted after I had duplicated everything to rev 1
Robert
thanks - the roofs are great
3 roofs was the answer PHEW!!!
but
i tried a roof for all but the garage and it seemed to fit right - except it had a roof thru the foyer.
when i exclude the foyer i am back to it looking wrong!
UPDATE - i remembered to make a bit of it gable
seems to be working - just not quite!
tried all but the garage - then cut the roof - didnt work.
thanks very much
maybe robbans roof could be exported as an 3ds file?
this roof problem is now officially BORING!

The roof as a 3ds. hope this will solve your problem, you have to adjust the angles an import in metric (mm) it will be correct scale.
The different in the 2 file annon_roof3 and annon_roof3B is the length of the roof over foyer. I took my +9 hours to solve the problem, so use it well. ;D
have a nice day/Robert
Problem SOLVED and very nicely done.
sorry it took you so much time.
thanks a trillion!
I have not really followed too closely your discussions with Robert re the roof but you have obviously got that sorted sufficiently to carry on which is good. However, I suddenly remembered that I still had TFP V12 on my old desktop so decided to have a look at your model in V12 - I didn't realise how much had changed (although mainly the toolbar buttons).
Looking again at your Google overhead image, a solution for the roof came instantly to mind that had not occurred to me before, so I tried it out in V12. It was very easy.
All I did was to put a roof just the width of the garage, right through to the back of the house, on the Ground Floor location, cutting out the bits that would protrude inside and changing their edges to gable. Then I created a Roof2 location same as the Ground Floor settings and put a rectangular roof spanning from left to right - hence part of it underneath the ground floor roof (and part of the ground floor roof under it also). The foyer roof I just added with a dormer, cutting out the portion of the main roof underneath it, to remove the main roof overhang. The dormer automatically provided the high walls and I just extended the roof section of the dormer to cover the porch. It was all done in a very short time. No good if you were trying to make construction drawings of course, since you have two roofs over one section but who cares if it is only for visualisation.
So really it was only two rectangular roofs with a dormer. Unfortunately it did not occur to me until I saw the Google image.
Having tried it out and it worked, I decided to see how it looked rendered, hence the images. I just added couple of plants at the front and path/garden a bit like the Google street view and flattened the arch a bit to match the photo. Obviously I dropped in a few lights for the night view, including a few overhead (out of sight of the camera) to light the roof slightly, (since that was the original subject!).
One thing the night view showed - you need to insert some curtains, just in case Google drive by again at night time!!!!
Since this was edited in V12 I have attached the file, in case you want to see how it was done. You may be able to use the idea some other time on another project.
Allan
that is amazing!
one minor note.
i had to make a front for the garage in 3ds cos the curve was not very nice -
in your pic - is that my gareage front or TFPs

That is your garage front - I did not change that.
As you said, low pitch arches do not look too good - they come out with flat edges.
Allan
now i have to figure out how you did the night light!
thanks
If you open the BLD file attached to the previous post you will see what I have done. Be careful you do not get it mixed up with your own current version as the name is still the same!!
The lighting is nothing elaborate - I just did it very quick - dropped the same light in some of the major rooms, foyer and porch (both elevated to 144") and a few elevated above the roof so they could not be seen from the camera view. The purpose was only to put some easy light on the roof since that was the subject of the post - without them it would be black! I made no attempt to disguise them, just made sure they could not be seen by the camera. There are also a couple of street lights at the front and sides to put a bit of light onto the lawn and sides of the house. If you use the Overview camera you will easily see the ones over the roof. They are just hanging on 'sky hooks'!
Obviously the Background image has to be changed to the night scene and 'Daylight' turned off. It has to be rendered using Advanced render and I used Quality 5 to make sure all the lights worked and radiosity was fully exposed. Quality 3 may be OK but can sometimes terminate early and switch to Raytrace mode prematurely, resulting in it being underexposed. Make sure ALL the lights you use have the same bulb (mine were 100W incandescent) or you may get odd results. My render settings are in the image below.
Basic render is quick but will not give good results as the lights create harsh shadows.
Allan
i sure have a lot to learn!
like where the heck do i change the 3d stuff!
found 3d real view but not levels like 3 and 5
thanks
The rendering controls are in Settings / Programme Settings under Rendering.
You can also get to them via the Options button in the 3D Real View dialog box - this takes you to Global Settings and Rendering.
I would suggest that you read though all the differennt settings that are available under Settings / Programme Settings. These are the backbone of how everthing is done. The default settings are usually fine but it helps to know what you can change how things work if you need to and shows you where everything is.
Allan
thanks very much
is the window frame odd because it is partly in the dormer window?
and where did the floor go!!!
thanks
The top part of the wall is the dormer wall which become invisible when it reaches the roof line. The lower part of the wall is your ground floor walls.
Simplest way to fix this is to extend the height of this front ground floor wall to 144" (from 3D view inside, select the wall immediately at the side of the door, right click and change the height to 144"). It will Hide the dormer wall in effect as it is thicker and the window trim will appear all around the window.
In restrospect the roof with the dormer should proabably have been inserted on the Ground floor location and the roof over the garage through to the back of the house whould have been on the second (Roof2) location, however it should make little difference.
If you deleted any walls of the dormer section the floor would dissappear as it was an automatic floor and the dormer walls create a 'room' so it put a floor in. Go to the ground floor and insert a floor again.
Allan
