how do i put a roof on a raised bit of a house?

Hi annon! That's total OK so I will draw the outlin then creat the roof and we will see if that you ar looking for, but I'm sorry to say I cant upload the bld fil to you, my version is TFP15 look below so it will be a screendump. That I draw befor was only an example.

Hi Anon!
I don't think that I can tell exact what I'm done, but in big turn have I used 3 different roof you can see it on image 2 to the garage have I used nearly the same technique that i used to the foyer roof.

I have redraw your drawing by help of Location and View filter. In your case have I select ground floor and duplicated to new level that I named to rev 1 with ground level at -96" this is a way to redo whit out delete you work,  then I did a new location ground-floor-new   whit floor-level at 4" and one Foyer location whit floor-level at 100" wall height 48" . The only thing I had to redraw was walls and doors and windows, all other items was only to duplicate from rev1 to ground-floor-new, the then I was finish the only I have to do was to delete rev1 , the old ground floor had I deleted after I had duplicated everything to rev 1

3 roofs was the answer PHEW!!!
but
i tried a roof for all but the garage and it seemed to fit right - except it had a roof thru the foyer.
when i exclude the foyer i am back to it looking wrong!

UPDATE - i remembered to make a bit of it gable
seems to be working  - just not quite!
tried all but the garage - then cut the roof - didnt work.

The roof as a 3ds. hope this will solve your problem, you have to adjust the angles an import in metric (mm) it will be correct scale.
The different in the 2 file annon_roof3 and annon_roof3B is the length of the roof over foyer. I took my +9 hours to solve the problem, so use it well.

I have not really followed too closely your discussions with Robert re the roof but you have obviously got that sorted sufficiently to carry on which is good.  However, I suddenly remembered that I still had TFP V12 on my old desktop so decided to have a look at your model in V12 - I didn't realise how much had changed (although mainly the toolbar buttons).

Looking again at your Google overhead image, a solution for the roof came instantly to mind that had not occurred to me before, so I tried it out in V12. It was very easy.

All I did was to put a roof just the width of the garage, right through to the back of the house, on the Ground Floor location, cutting out the bits that would protrude inside and changing their edges to gable. Then I created a Roof2 location same as the Ground Floor settings and put a rectangular roof spanning from left to right - hence part of it underneath the ground floor roof (and part of the ground floor roof under it also). The foyer roof I just added with a dormer, cutting out the portion of the main roof underneath it, to remove the main roof overhang.  The dormer automatically provided the high walls and I just extended the roof section of the dormer to cover the porch. It was all done in a very short time. No good if you were trying to make construction drawings of course, since you have two roofs over one section but who cares if it is only for visualisation.

So really it was only two rectangular roofs with a dormer. Unfortunately it did not occur to me until I saw the Google image.

Having tried it out and it worked, I decided to see how it looked rendered, hence the images. I just added couple of plants at the front and path/garden a bit like the Google street view and flattened the arch a bit to match the photo. Obviously I dropped in a few lights for the night view, including a few overhead (out of sight of the camera) to light the roof slightly, (since that was the original subject!).

One thing the night view showed - you need to insert some curtains, just in case Google drive by again at night time!!!!

Since this was edited in V12 I have attached the file, in case you want to see how it was done. You may be able to use the idea some other time on another project.

That is your garage front - I did not change that.
As you said, low pitch arches do not look too good - they come out with flat edges.

If you open the BLD file attached to the previous post you will see what I have done. Be careful you do not get it mixed up with your own current version as the name is still the same!!

The lighting is nothing elaborate - I just did it very quick - dropped the same light in some of the major rooms, foyer and porch (both elevated to 144") and a few elevated above the roof so they could not be seen from the camera view. The purpose was only to put some easy light on the roof since that was the subject of the post - without them it would be black! I made no attempt to disguise them, just made sure they could not be seen by the camera. There are also a couple of street lights at the front and sides to put a bit of light onto the lawn and sides of the house. If you use the Overview camera you will easily see the ones over the roof. They are just hanging on 'sky hooks'!

Obviously the Background image has to be changed to the night scene and 'Daylight' turned off. It has to be rendered using Advanced render and I used Quality 5 to make sure all the lights worked and radiosity was fully exposed. Quality 3 may be OK but can sometimes terminate early and switch to Raytrace mode prematurely, resulting in it being underexposed.  Make sure ALL the lights you use have the same bulb (mine were 100W incandescent) or you may get odd results. My render settings are in the image below.

Basic render is quick but will not give good results as the lights create harsh shadows.

The rendering controls are in Settings / Programme Settings under Rendering.

You can also get to them via the Options button in the 3D Real View dialog box - this takes you to Global Settings and Rendering.

I would suggest that you read though all the differennt settings that are available under Settings / Programme Settings. These are the backbone of how everthing is done.  The default settings are usually fine but it helps to know what you can change how things work if you need to and shows you where everything is.
