I'm currently experiencing the frustration with the issues concerning file size, PC specifications when using TFP&LPRO V16 and importing 3Ds object TC3DProV19 and 3Ds Trees- Bushes XFROG larger 3D files. I'm using a win7x32 with 2GB RAM and 512GB video Card The File size project was over 72,000 KB and TFP&LPro V16 will not render real view. I replaced 3ds trees, bushes I had imported from XFROG software replacing them with TFP&L and reduced the file to a little over 32,000 KB and still can't do real render. I tried adjusting the settings in the advance setting for the last two weeks and still having the same problem. :o
I 'm working on reducing the file size more and keep trying until the New PC HP with win7x64 with 4GB Ram and 1G video Card I'm purchasing gets delivered. :'(
I will keep you inform at the result!

Hi Robert,
This illustrates the problem with many imported objects and trees are one of the worst. The problem is there are so many surfaces and it is trying to create a shadow for each leaf. With Advanced render it would be trying to do that, as well as bouce light from one leaf to another and everything else, so rendering times would be horrific. There is a similar problem, though not as bad, with many curved surfaces.
I only use 3DS trees on rare occasions, to achieve a specific shadow. For trees I usually take my own photos, in high resolution - they have no impact on file size and render in seconds. There is no 3DS tree that beats them for realism.
When you said it will "not render" - what happened - did it crash, give a message or what? or was it taking so inordinately long that you gave up? In the past if I have had a very big project (like one which was a 62 room Convention Centre) I would start the render and go to bed - I have better PC now but it is only about the same as yours.
Allan
Hi Robert,
I have bad news.... probably you won't get spectacular results. The rendering in Turbocad and TFP are different systems. And to be honest, I didn't like Tcad V19
I have a Win7 computer with 8GB Ram and VC with 2G and I was able to render a file with 260 mb (no trees) , but it was slow....
As Alan stated, plants and trees are not intended to be 3D objects in TFP, because the large number of polygons.
My suggestion for trees and plants --> use pictures as photoboards
Pat
More info regarding the imported objects / trees, files' sizes, etc
I did the following exercise
I downloaded a 3D tree (Alpine fir --> see jpg image attached) using different formats (not all of them can be imported in Turbofloorplan) --> so I converted it to dxf and 3DS using Turbocad These are the sizes
*.3ds file --> 2348 kb
*.dxf file --> 18097 kb
Then, I used an old program to check the numer of polygons --> check the image attached and you will understand the issue --> 79416 polygons!!! :o
So, by checking your computer capabilties, you can do the math regarding the rendering times, crashes, etc
Pat
Why should I have a problem creating in TurboFloorPlan & Landscaping 3D Pro V16 using the trees provided in it's catalog ?
:o ???
Robert
You lost me here????
Are you telling me that imported objects created in TurboCad v19 as 3ds files into TurboFloorplan & Landscaping pro v16 will be problematic? ???
I can understand PC issues, and rendering a large file specially having importing better quality trees would make a longer and slower rendering process, but after replacing the trees with the trees in the provided catalog?? ??? >:( :o
This is costing me Time and money.... :(
Not a very optimistic out look for either program, If Im limited to small house, and limited amount of fake looking trees etc.
I was hoping pro meant I can create not play :o
When I said it will not render I meant that even at the lowest quality Option. It will calculate the polygons: 3401001, and time: 375s , at 1-step Radiosity, then I will get an error message:
File parse error
file-obj_6045_0_0.ent
then
never finish raytrace (also disabling Raytrace)
And I would wait Hrs and no rendering process ???
Here are samples of the project I created.
1= This is the design I try to render with the largest file size to date. I needed to add the street lamp post & other light fixtures to be completed but is on hold till I resolve the problems. (Take a look at the camera Properties and you get a better Idea of the size of the Shopping center terrain, boundaries and trees to compare the modifications with the other remakes. Also you will notice I replaced the trees and reduced objects as well as terrain, boundaries, plus cut structure to half the actual building)
2= This version has the replace trees.reduced terrain and Boundaries.
3= This version is the top layout view of the final reductions in version 4.
4= This is the smallest version with replaced tree, half the structure, less cars, less parking area, reduced terrain and boundaries.
I have stopped trying rendering out of frustration, and lack of objects to reduce or remove hoping that the new PC investment with better ram, video card etc would solve it. I have spoken with David, Doug, Chris and no solution yet to my problem. :-[ :'(
P.S. The Awnings + Awning Frames- Roof metal tiles (this is the larges file do to the detail of being each tile was duplicated to the size of roof, then saved as a 3Ds single object file) and the store signs, I created with TurboCad 3D Pro V19 the trees where from 3Ds files from XFrog software
Hi Robert,
I will try to pick out the key points of your last few posts.

You shouldn't. They are not 3D trees so should not be a problem. I have used hundreds in one model with not problems at all.

Not necessarily. Whether the object was created in TurboCAD or any other program makes no difference, it is still a 3DS file. There is no direct relationship between TurboCAD and TurboFloorPlan except they are both sold by IMSI Design. TC is an IMSI production, TFP is produced by Cadsoft for IMSI. You can import objects from one to the other, but only in the same way you can do that with other programs. What I am saying is that being a 3DS object created by TC does not make it any more acceptable to TFP than one created by AutoCAD, ShetchUp or any other CAD software. All potentailly produce large files and when imported to TFP can blow out memory tremendously where TFP own generations are tiny.

Your are certainly not limited to a small house and fake trees. As I mentiomned before I have produced some large projects, the 62 room convention centre I mentioned earlier was by no means small and included over 2000 specially designed 3DS chairs. Look in the Gallery and you will see some large projects (eg a 9 storey office block http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,758.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,758.0.html) and 12 storey apartment building http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1604.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1604.0.html) and very realistic trees as in the example below. My Convention Centre with the roof off indicates the size potential, as does Capture5. This is not mine and I do not know who actually did it now, except for the words on it, but this was done in Envisioneer. As mentioned before TFP is the 3D part of Envisioneer, so TFP could have produced exactly the same model and rendered it. The two will open, edit and render each others 3D files. Envisioneer differs only in its 2D capabilities. I simply posted it to indicate that size should not be a problem.

The number of polygons is a real worry as is the Parse Error. This indicates a corrupt element (entity) and even if the model was very small it would likely not render. The most common cause is a corrupt wall (bad wall join) or a 'corrupt' import. You will have to find the problem entity by a process of elimination. Turn off walls first and try to render again. If it works the problem is in the walls (check all the joins), If it still doesn't work, turn the walls back on and turn something else off (especially imported objects) and try again until you find the object and delete it.

This potentiall is the biggest problem. If I am understanding this brief description correctly, it sound as though the whole roof is made of 3D 'metal tiles' and that the signs are also 3 dimentional. Normally this would be done by taking a photo of the 'tile', saving as a texture and apply to the roof and use photoboards as the signs - all of which use NO memory, as they are simply referenced from the Textures folder on your computer. Potentally this would cut the file size down dramatically and, once the curruption mentioned earlier is removed, it should render in farily short time. In fact, I would save the project with a different name, delete the '3DS roof' and try a render - maybe there is some part of that which is causing the problem. If so then you would obviously have to creat a TFP roof using a tile photo as a texture. You may get away with the signs, but if not then use photoboards. They can look very real and look 3D even if they aren't.
Allan
Thank you Allan.
1-I have 6 variations of this project and each has a different name.
2- After my last post I took the last project gave it a new name and deleted the roof tile and was doing exactly your suggestion to reduce file size and see if that might be the problem.
Regarding the roof, if you look at the layout image I posted, the 1st building with an octagon shape and triangle area is all flat roof. In the 2nd rectangular building with flat roof.
There is two octagon towers 2 stories high with gable roof between the 2 separate buildings. I used the roof tool to create the roof but instead of tile appearance I chose paint surface and imported the tile 3ds roof I created because the metal roof tile surface didn't come in the color I wanted
In the outer front of the two buildings there is a 3ds file porch roof I imported in two parts, 1 angle flat roof & 2 the angle metal roof tile ( none were converted to roof or roof surface) with columns and a 2 story towers with gable roof with the same paint application and imported metal roof tile ( roof created with roof tool and paint surface and imported 3ds roof tile as a decorative object not roof surface)
After deleting all the roof tile and left the roof with the paint application, I did my first real render and I get the same error. waited over 3 hours and gave up so I closed the render.
Thanks for your suggestion, I will have to find the problem entity by a process of elimination. Turn off walls first and try to render again. If it works the problem is in the walls (check all the joins), If it still doesn't work, turn the walls back on and turn something else off (especially imported objects) and try again until I find the object and delete it.
Fingers cross
Thanks
Robert

Did you actually get the same error message or was it just the time factor that caused you to give up? If you get the error message it does not matter how long you wait it will not work. Once the error message comes then just abort it and turn something else off until you find it. Set the rendering size small and use a low quality so that your test renders will be quicker. I never do tests larger than 640x480 - sometimes only half that. It is enough to see if it works and that you have the sun at the right angle and brightness.
Does it render on Basic? Often this is all you need for exterior views as there is not much reflected light involved and usually it is much quicker. Advanced is best for interior views with artificial lighting.
Allan
Hi again Robert,
I was just looking at your latest images again and noticed what I assume is a river on the left. If this is the case then I presume the texture is set to be reflective. Reflections can also slow down rendering, so if you are using lots of reflective textures unnecessarily (eg internal walls or the river if it isn't in view at the time) then making them Dull will speed up the Raytrace section of the render. This has nothing to do with the error message you are getting though.
Allan
Good Eye ;)
Yes there's a canal.I just reduce the size of the canal and waiting for rendering test, I will check the reflection setting. The error is the same, and I started using # 2 setting fast at display modify view, -day light enable-Fog & smoke disable- Brightness .75
Thank you, I appreciate your help
Robert :)
I have been using advance settings, David said he preferred rendering using advance, next time I will use basic. The first rendering I try two weeks ago was using Basic and the program froze & closed, I believe it had to do with VC issues and that I had 0.0 brightness, Day light & Fog and smoke enable and quality settings, after that all my test have been using advance and I adjusted the settings.
The acceleration is disable because one time after I had install a new Geforce 6200 512mb VC the program would close. David has the details.
I'm currently uninstalled the new VC and using the factory PC Original VC!
Robert
P.S. I spoke to many people from IMSI-TCF about this problem I not sure it was David, Chris or Dough that mention that they prefere going through the Advance render rather than Basic :-\
My screen saver power save interrupted the rendering progress after 4 hrs. I went to sleep at 5:30 am ET woke at 9:45 am and noticed the screen at sleep tried to wake it and The program was not responding and had to be force quit . I set it to never sleep and will try again later. ::)
Robert
So I was curious and did a small test; TFP16 vs. Carrara Studio 8 3D
Selected a "palm tree" model .3ds approx 617K polygons, 23.7 MB file
results:
TFP
basic render: 12 seconds (render looked just fine with shadows thru "leaves" on ground)
adv render: TFP stopped after 10 minutes of no response (started loading poly's but stopped after 10 sec., no error msg)
C8
raytrace render: 2 seconds
full radiosity render: 28 sec.
Conclusion, TFP not at all capable of handling large poly .3ds files; especially for adv. renders. Not only was render slow or non-responsive, screen display (HA "on") was dead slow; while C8 acted in real time response to moving and zooming.
All work done on same PC with all same things running (IE9 and Outlook as well as several small background little apps).
I watched the task manager resource manager and TFP does not know how to use 8 cores/thread (i7 4 core); staying well below avg CPU use of 20% each. And TFP does not utilize video card to much advantage (I have a Radeon 6780 1 GB card).
But then TFP s/w cost to purchase is very reasonable/lower...but is also specific to architecture/landscape.
;) Thank you Allan,
The lat Time I tried rendering There was one great sign! after deleting just the roof tile and reducing the size of the lake, and terrain I didn't get the file error again and it looked promising but for the length it was taken . if the screen had not shut down about 3:00 hrs thru the render process I believe it would I would have a rendering.
I set the screen saver to never shut, did memory clean up I'm waiting for PC Full scan to finish! I'm going to try again and then I will also do a test with the 3ds object and 3ds trees as you did to see what are the result. :)
Thank you
God Bless
Robert
Thank you Doug, I will do similar test using my imported .3ds Object I created w/ TCP V19 & .3ds trees from X Frog plants using TFPH&L v16 and see what hapens. ;)
Robert
:) Great News ;D
Finally I got my first renderings ;)
Thanks to Allan's dedication , Knowledge and guidance, I'm able to finally get closer to complete my project.
Thank you Doug, Basic rendering was the way to go! ;) Also my screen saver was running in energy savings and by disabling it and setting it to performance I believe was part of the solution. The render ton between 5 - 10 min to figure the shadows and in no time started to render and It was done ;D
There was no problem with the imported 3ds file roof tile, and the store signs I created with TC pro V19, amazingly when I created the signs I used the text tool and by exploding it i was able to make them 3d and by using the plastic material and inserting lights when I saved then as 3ds files they actually light up in TFP H&L PRO V16 render :o
After few tests and adjusting the global settings this are the latest renderings I accomplish
Thanks
Robert
Hi Robert,
So good to hear that you got it working and it is looking good. ;)
Since you were able to get the signs illuminated it might be interesting to see it with the daylight off. Basic is not ideal in this situation but worth a try first before trying Advanced again 'in the dark'.
Allan
Thanks Allan,
Today I been trying to render a version of this project with the entire building and 2/3 in the raytrace process I get an erroe message: Primative error I select ok a few times and the rendering process bar shows trying to keep processing but in the view window is like the1- sample image below.I waited 10 min, and I close the rendering and then I try again in level 1-render low 640 x 480 or 800 x600 but same result
The 2- Sample today I didn't like the Palm tree in the image so I replaced it with another ,saved file with new name and every render after that I get the same error and same bad result as shown in 1st sample image. ???
Robert
Hi Robert,
I have selected some photoboard trees that I have taken myself for you to try. They are im the BIM file attached and the image shows what they look like.
Go to File / Catalogues / Import BIM and Transfer them to your catalogue and see how they look. They may give the better look that you are aiming for. It may say they were created in a later version but should still import - hopefully.
The error could still indicate a corruption shomewhere if it has appeared when you have tried to render "with the whole building". What did you turn on? It raises the question whether there is still something there that is causing the problem.
Allan
Thanks again Allan you never fail me.
I've been rendering all day and night yesterday. ::)
I figured out why I was getting the Primative error. Soon I will post few progress sample. I been rendering up to level-4 - size 800 x 600, I'm waiting to have all the best result settings to proceed to Level- 5 render in 800 X 600, I been having problems with size 1024 X 768.
I'm up to test render #32, is taken me 9-test of "Day" renders to arrive at the best Global setting for best result and # 23 test's to have the best "Night" render view result .
"Night" has been difficult and time consuming adjusting interior and exterior lights settings to arrive at the best looking night results. ::)
Advance was not successful, I will get the render error but Basic has always render with no errors.
Thanks I downloaded the photoboard trees and will give it a try. The software I have, Xfrog has the trees in 3D or image I didn't know if the image trees will work in TFP. I imported a png file image of the store sign using import photoboard but the transparency would turn to gray image in the project 3d view I was not able to do a render test so I stopped importing png file.
Robert
TWO NIGHT SCENE.

2- NIGHT MOON background scene with best light & setting result so far Level-4.

1- DAY FOREST background scene with best light & setting result so far Level-4.

Hi Robert,
Looks like you are gradually getting there! Are you sill having problems with Advanced? You will find, if you can get it to work, that the night renders will be mush more realistic than the Basic ones.
Allan
I did try using the Advance settings to render the Night scene and I got the same error we discussed at the start of this forum.
One great benefit from having this problems is the knowledge and experience I'm acquiring. Thank you for your help, I've learned a lot from this experience and Loving this program even more.
Yesterday I change the Camera's location and angles . This created New error issues, but for the first time TFP suggested to change the Sun or camera's position, there was a problem figuring the geometric and angles.
I spend all day changing the Sun & Camera angles, locations, quite an experience, finally at about 2:30 AM it started to render without errors but it took over an hour to be Done. This morning I proceede to render Night Time version and after an over one & a half hour it was Done with no errors. ;D
Next I plan to replace the Palm trees with the desire Palms I originally wanted as photoboard trees like you suggested, Thanks to your suggestion I'm very optimistic that it will get me the quality I was expecting and conclude this part of the project so I can start working on the Business store interior design of this project.
Bellow are the latest Day and Night render with the new camera angle
Robert
Hi Robert,
I am a bit concerned that you still have a corruption there somewhere and wondered whether you would like me to have a look at it for you? If you start working on the inside you may run into further issues. How big is the file now? It would be too big to post here but you could email it to me if our emails will take the size. (alches AT iinet.net.au)
Allan
I try sending the project file to David but it exceeded my and his maximum size aloud to be e-mail, file size is 36,759 KB
You can zip it
or use yousendit lite --> is free (max file 50 Mb)

New issue.
I try to import the trees and shrub files and I got a error claiming that your version of TFP Home Landscaping is newer than mine :o I just purchased mine a v16 ???
I closed the pront and window to import the files open I selected and attach the files, clicked ok and it starting importing, I call imsi tech he was not able to help, I search through file-catalog- Open-selected Master Catalog.bdb file I get C:\ ProgramData|IMSIDesign|TURBOFloorPlan3D Home & Landscape PRO 16\Catalogs\TurboFLOORPLAN_Master Catalog.bdb may be in use or you do not have access rights. Please check with your local Administrator.
Cant fiend the Trees- & Shrubs you send me anywhere I serch in photoboard etc, going crazy ???
Robert
Hi Robert,
If you go back to the post where I attached the Tree.BIM file you will notice that I mentioned that "It may say they were created in a later version but should still import - hopefully". Twechnically I am using a later version as I was using Envisioneer 7.2 at the time, which would in efffect be TFP V16.2. Since the two updates to Envisioneer only involved 2D components that are not included in TFP, explains why we have not received any updates and now a V17 is probably just around the corner.
I have just opened TFP V16 and imported the same BIM file without any problem. It did prompt saying it was produced in a later version, and when I clicked Cancel (the only option) the BIM file opened.
As in the image I first clicked Documents (on the BIM side) and the Transfer. When I went to Insert / Photoboards the two trees and two shrubs were there in the Objects folder (at the bottom - as in the image). Yours should have saved in exactly the same place.
Allan
Thanks
I will retry
Robert
a way to "send" large files is to use a free web service like drop box or one of many others.
You upload the file to the site and it sends an email to where you want the file to go and the person there gets a link so he can then download the file
Usually the file stays available only for a few days
Search Google for drop box or similar
Thank you Doug
To be honest, I have used such web site before but I don't like to send my original files out on the net.
I have experience theft of my work by individuals from other countries. Some of my 3D videos in youtube I found where being sold in Europe.
Robert
Allan,
I decided to import to import into my photoboard perspective Palms and trees I have from XFROG and they worked great
The software XFROG Plants I have provide me with excellent plants in three formats, Billboard, Perspective and 3D Models. Using PhotoShop I coverted the perspective TIFF file to Targa file and was able to import as photoboard into the project and by going to catalog/Save Element to Catalog I accomplish the quality of trees & Palms I desired. 8)
Below are the lastes results using High quality resolution, Level-5 render ;D
P.S. Also I've been saving the projects to my exterior memory drive, to elevate PC hard drive memory and found out I needed to make sure the original Palms and trees I used to import where also saved in my exterior memory drive along with the projects or else I would lose the target perspective plants when re opening the project.
The original files where in a usb flash drive and when I removed the drive and try opening the project, the photoboard imports where Gray with no images ::)
Robert
Hi Robert,
The trees look much better!
Photoboards and textures are only referenced from your computer - they are not saved with the model. To be sure they work in different situations it is best to save them in the TFP Textures folder - that way it, and you, always know where they are. If you get a new computer, all you have to do is copy the Textures folder over and ALL projects will work.
Are the images done with Basic or Advanced render?
Allan
Thanks again ;)
Images where made with Basic, Level-5
Since last try using advance I had problems I decided to stick with Basic. I plan to reduce size of this project to only the building with the store space interior I'm designing I will then go advance render. ;)
Robert
Hi Robert,
The quality levels only work with Advanced so it will not make any difference where you set that.
I am still a but concerned that you may have a corruption lurking there somewhere. Have you tried zipping the file to see if it will then fit into an email so you can send it to me?
Allan
Allan,
I believe the problem is my PC, not Corrupt files. ::)
Why would Basic work if I had a corrupt File. ???

Many sites now do allow for "privacy" protection requiring a separate password to retrieve/download a file.
But of course NOTHING is fully protected on the web....so you can reduce, but probably never eliminate all risk of theft.
So I do understand your concern and I forgot to mention that before....but doing so now for other users who may read this in future.
Thanks for understanding!!! ;)

Why would Basic work if I had a corrupt File. ???
It could be the PC but I have many times seen a corruption cause Advanced to fail but not Basic. Advanced renders the WHOLE model in 3D, with light and shade, and you can then walk around it in this mode, with the lights and shadows on and get a much better picture of the model. A bonus is that you can then 'take photos' from different angles, without having to render the model again. This means of course, that the process is looking at evey aspect of the model, internal and external and even below the terrain. If it comes across something it cannot resolve, it will crash.
Basic is like a camera snapshot - it does not really care what is out of sight of the camera, just purely what it sees. If the problem is inside, or under the terrain, it does not care, as it can't see it so the render is OK. That said I have also seen Basic fail where Advanced has suceeded. They are different processes, so obviously different things can affect them - which is why the Quality Level settings do not work for Basic.
Allan
Makes sense ;)
I'm currently working on the interior part of the project.
I'm deleting parts of the building and exterior objets that I will not need for the final render , this will reduce the file size then check everything to make sure is correct before doing my test Advance rendering. I will keep my fingers cross, if I'm still having this trouble after checking, it would have to be the PC ?? ::)
Robert
Hi Robert,
I am no computer expert, but I cannot think of a reason why a computer issue would break one type of render and not the other but maybe the different processes could utilise different computer resources. Pat may have some logic on that. 99% of the problems in the past as I recall have been corruptions in the model. Hopefully it will be in one of the areas you are deleting! ;)
Allan

Nope not necessarily. When you get to that point, if you can share the .bld file here, others may also try to render...if they all fail then it is the file or TFP code. If it only fails on your PC but is OK everywhere else; then it would seem to be your PC....either h/w or s/w.
Also try on your PC with h/w acceleration both "on" and "off" (two separate renders; or 4 if both basic and advanced) to test for GPU/graphics/video card or its driver s/w.

You will find a list of all the folders where things are saved/referenced on your computer in Settings/ Program Settings / General. You have obviously been there before but just not realised that the list tells you where everything is.
Allan
Thanks Allan & Doug,
I figure out how to save to Texture & How to Save Materials. ;)
Love acquiring knowledge from problems ;D

Hi Robert!
If you use the simplify in the catalog you can reduce the file-size but I have not tested how much it will do.

Hi Kajvin, (I prefer your real name but I understand the reason for the change!),
The Simplfy does work and reduces the size somewhat, but does so by deleting some surfaces so you can end uo with holes in the object.

Sometimes holes are generated in vertex models in TFP because the imported (have not seen it yet in TFP made models; but I could have been just lucky) files do not have all the vertexes welded together...and it shows as a high vertex count.
One can export object to a modelling program such as Hexagon (was free for a while, not sure if still free)
EDIT: still free on 7-3-12

and there the vertexes can be welded together as well as surfaces simplified greatly, without losing quality in important areas; thus making the .3ds file much smaller, yet still look/render the same in TFP.
The typical exception is 3D trees with lots of leaves . . . unless the leaves are complex shapes which can be simplified . . otherwise the size comes from lots of individual leaf shapes . . . which also add to render times to calc everything.
I did many "rocks" that way. Got them (including textures) via Google .skp but they were large files causing TFP to slow (I used many); but I overcame the file size issues by "simplifying" the rock files. For example the bottoms of rocks (sitting on the ground) have no need for a surface so I deleted them. Other surfaces can be simplified (fewer triangles). Then, all went well in TFP.

This program maybe work to make 3D-people of 2D.
