Title: how do i tell turbo 12 that on some parts of the roof- NO eaves!
Post by: anon125 on September 27, 2012, 01:10:02 PM
i think that is the problem. where the 12 foot foyer is, the main roof should come up to it but not have eaves!
i think they stick thru the 8 foot walls.
for the 3rd pic i made the top roof a different colour - just to make it clear
i suspect that the top roof should join onto the main roof. see actual pic
thanks

Hi Rick,

I am away from home so can't look at you actual model at the moment but the answer to your question about the eaves is: Select the roof, click on the edges of the roof you want to have no eaves so the arrow turns green and make sure all the others are red, right click and in the roof Properties change the Overhang to 0 ( or 1 if it wont accept zero).

There should not be any need to make a 3DS roof - from the photo it looks very simple. From what I can see by the images it looks as though the edges of the main roof- presumably the ones sticking through the walls, need to be changed to Gables. This will raise that roof up to a straight hip roof and your red roof will join into it as I presume it should.

Unless someone else looks at this before, I will have a look at your model when I get home (12+ hours)

I would completely agree with Allan.
The lower hip roof is a rain disaster waiting to happen . . . i.e. the roof drains into the house and will, in time, leak.

Roofs are almost never designed that way . . . for the obvious leak problem. And the solution is to make the hip roof next to second story a gable so it drains away from the house.  It may join the upper roof but does not have to; depends on the roof slopes and wall heights.

one problem guys - that iS how the house is built!
at least the sides of the 12 foot part are clearly visible. a triangle shape
i assume the back joins the rest of the roof.
so please try again!
thanks

Hi Rick,

The photo certainly helps and what I said before I think is still the answer. The  raised section  on  second location and set each edge of the main roof around this 'entry room' set to  Gables with zero or mini eaves.

It the wall heights of tbe two locatons are set correctly in Building Locations and the slope of the roof is correct tben you should not need to raise the roof.

Haven't looked at the model yet sorry - just got home and it is midnight. Will try tomorrow.

Easiest way, typically, is to increase the slope until it looks correct. Increase all or some depending on what design you want.

You can make the first floor walls taller but that may not match what you want.

see attached.
it is the view from the left.
how do i make the slope of the main roof right so the gap between the back of the raised portion joins the main roof
the eaves are still a problem. on the left they have to be there on the garage part up to the posts - but not from there - is this doable?
thanks
PS this is the last bit to finish. i even made animations! a few seconds was 9GB!

Hi Rick,

Obviously the house already exists since you presumably posted a Google Maps view of it. If this is the case I  would suggest that you check the wall height of the main part of the house,  the 'entry' and the pitch of the roof because if you have these correct by the actual building, then it should join up correctly.

You need to set the wall height in Building Locations as that  controls where the roof sits. The walls themselves should be set to AutoExtend to the roof. The pitch of the roof is set in Roof Properties for each edge that is Hip while the 'cut out' around the Entry should be set to Gable.

You need the outside wall height since the inside is only to the ceiling.

The eaves can be set any length down to zero or just a fraction in some cases.

Allan.

You can have different eaves on every edge of the roof if you want. When you select the roof one edge will have a green arrow the others red. The green one is the one you can edit. You can select several if you want.

house windows are different- but that is all

but on the SAME edge - i need eaves on one part and not on another.
also the walls on the left of the foyer need 2 walls one above the other. the top one has to have stucco on the back side and the lower one just paint cos it is inside.
i tried copying the 4foot high wall from the right and moving it to the left once i had made those walls 8 feet tall.
but the software did not like it! kept deleting the door and window above it.
hmmm ... am i expecting too much?
thanks

Check your render settings . . . maybe you made a hi res HD?  Also assume you did a full uncompressed video which is OK/good, but you can use  codec to reduce file size a lot

All depends on your final use needs as to what to render to in terms of size of frames/resolution/compression.  Quality usually can be reduced in videos because images are fleeting rather than examining a "frozen image" scene/"photo"/"still".

Yes!

While I don't have the time to work on your .bld file, I'm confident TFP can do this design without any special tricks or imports etc.  Should be reasonably straightforward for someone who has used TFP for several more than simple designs.

The supplied roof top plan view seems reasonable...just plenty of work to get each area to match/fit . . . probably needs a few 'roof by points' and then joined together as I don't think it can be done just by the whole house in one roof selection....at least not including the foyer. One roof over main house and a second roof over foyer may work OK.  Also may need a second story for Foyer, but I'd try with tall walls first.

Make one roof (except do not include foyer), then adjust roof pitch to get the heights correct; it seems like a conventional roof design with matching pitches to keep the roof design looking good and fitting together.  At last resort you may need to do a few roof areas by points and then merging them together by dragging edges into each other.

Recommend just doing a simple external walls floorplan, no windows etc. just to get a roof design done; then add details of doors/windows etc.  You can have windows above doors on one tall wall; insert window, elevate, insert door and slide it under window (or do vice versa); has been discussed in this forum a while back.

Suggest rather than describe all the problems at once, do a design, when stuck with one problem, write again with picture example of what is wrong and supply a .bld file.  You will be making progress one step at a time and people here can help with specifics better than a whole design concept.

Since it has a design and been built to code, I'm sure TFP can do it without much fuss.

the whole plan is done with windows etc. i removed the doors etc to make the bld file smaller for posting.
a dormer roof worked for the top part, and i had to cut a hole in the roof for the tall part.

then i ran out of patience! so i just made a 3ds roof.

Sorry Rick, when I got home I obvious forgot about it!  :-[

Have had a look at the file now and can see there are several issues.

Hopefully the images will help you to see what to do. It is a little complicationed towards the end so these steps show must be in the order shown or it will not work. This round about way in steps 7-12 is because the Foyer roof overlaps the corner of the main roof so it is important to cut the hole in the roof small and widen it AFTER the other steps especially because you have one wall there with no eaves on one part and eaves on the other. Follow the steps strictly in order and it will work - as per completed image.

Sometimes a "brute force" or alternate solution is better/easier/faster.

Another example of "alternate" is to finalize a rendered image is Photoshop or similar because re-doing a render to fix color/brightness/contrast/etc. would simply take too long.....or a special effect such as local blurring to imply depth such as seen when using a camera/lens with shallow depth of field to make a photo . . . and TFP can't do that.

what i need is a way of moving things UNDER the 3ds roof without moving the carefully positioned roof.
when i try to select anything it just see the roof!

As mentioned in my point 4 previous post, you need to use wall Preperties Trim/ Custom/ Wainscot. Do a Search on Wainscot for more details. Two or even 3 textures can be applied to inside and outside walls this way.

To move things under other things, such as your roof, use the View Filter to make to roof 'unselectable', by clicking the little filter icon next to the group in which you imported your roof. For example: if the roof is in Exterior Accessories, the click the filter icon next to Exterior Accessories, so the icon goes white - normal is orange. When you try to select anything now it will ignore the roof. You can also turn it off altogether by clicking the Eye, so it closes.

An alternative, if turning the item view filter "off"  (closed eye) does not work for you or turns off too many things etc.    . . .

is to change the elevation of the roof....to an easily remembered number such as -40' and it will "hide" under the terrain but still be easily available and returned to "normal" by changing the elevation back up +40'.

You can do this easily for any single or multiple items to temporarily get them out of the way.

Still another alternative is to move the roof to another location, then it will not be affected at all unless you go to that location. This is probably where it should really have been in the first place.

that elevation idea sounds great.

When you import a 3DS you have to nominate a section where you will save it. It is that section you must set to to be unselectable because it was obviously not saved into the roof section. If you did not tell it where to locate it then it is probably under Appliances as thst lists first I think.

In your model you already have a location called Roof 2 I think it was. If you just select the 3DS roof, right click and choose Duplicate to Location and choose Roof 2, it will copy it there and you can just delete the original. It is then on its own location. It should keep the elevation but if not you may have to adjust that again but at least you only have to do it once not every time you want it out of the way.
