Cavity Wall

How does one create a cavity wall.

100 / 110 mm external Brick wall  -  75 / 80 mm Cavity  -  100 / 110 mm internal Block.

The blocks will be 450 mm W - 215 mm H - and 100 / 110 mm thick.

Hi Andy,

Your catalogue should have a brick veneeer wall already but it will not add the exterior brick, until you join four walls to make a room - the brick veneer is then automatically added as the Exterior surface.  However the built-in walls probably will not be to the specification you want and unfortunately you cannot alter this in TurboFloorPlan (except the wall thickness - Core setting).  The ability to alter the inside configuration of the wall is only possible in the parent program, Envisioneer.

However I have created a wall for you that is 110 + 80 cavity + 110 and called it a 300mm Double Brick Cavity Wall, that should import into TFP OK and become part of your catalogue. To inport the BIM file, go to File / Catalogues / Import BIM.  This will show a dual panel screen, one side being your catalogue and the other the imported BIM file. All you have to do is click the Transfer button.

When you use this wall in your model, you should get a 110mm wall until they join to create a room, at which point the exterior 110 brick will be added with an 80mm cavity.

The size of the brick is not used as this is only a texture applied to the exterior surface. You may want to take a photo of your specific bricks and use the photo to make the brick surface. This post should help with applying the brick texture: http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1227.0.html.

Try the BIM file and see if it is what you want. If it needs to be modified at all just let me know.

Hi Alan

Thanks again for a solution to a 'problem'.

Had one or two small problems with loading it in to the library, mainly due to the fact that I got a warning notice that this was created in a later version of the program - I am using TurboFloorPlan V15.

The other thing that confuses me is that you have to draw interior walls, and it adds the exterior.  It would be better the other way round, but I can live with this.

Hi Andy,

The exterior veneer being added later does seem confusing initially but is actually very useful as it saves a lot of work in many ways. For instance: If you have just a rectangle for a building, but you need a recess on one side (eg a recessed entry doorway), you can just draw the rectangle (it will add the veneer), then draw the recess using the same wall (no veneer is added as it is internal). Now select the wall that is across the recess and delete it and instantly the exterior veneer is added to the recess.  No modifying of walls etc, it just happens!  You can continue to draw all your other interior walls using the same wall and it just stays as an interior wall.  If however, you continue the interior wall outside the rectangle and return to join the rectangle again, then it will add the exterior brick veneer around the exterior section and delete the exterior brick on what has now become an interior wall.  Very clever really.  At the same time I suppose it could have been programmed to work in reverse. It is easy to get used to.

I am surprised you got a 'later version' message. The wall was created in Envisioneer 6.1 so it is a 'fraction' later but that should not have made any difference I would have thought, as the BIM file is an international, interprogram, standard. Just curious, when did the message appear -at what point in the import? and also did it complete OK so you were able to use the wall?

Don't know when the message appeared.

It appears to work, still getting to grips with the program, so many things to try.

I gave it a try also....and I was importing to English/Imperial not metric....but it works, as indicated by prev. post....

When selecting the .bim file to import in dialog box, it says its from a newer version....but click "cancel" or just "x" close the box and the window opens to 'transfer' from C: drive to catalog OK and it imports and runs OK

Hello all,
I have started with a trial version of TFP DeLuxe 15, running on Windows XP Pro, I was initially very impressed with its capabilities.
However, I am having a very frustrating problem with exterior walls.
What I want to do is draw the floor-plan for the house we are in the process of buying so that we can arrange our existing furniture in the new house.

I drew the house external walls to the correct dimensions and proceeded to draw the interior walls to construct rooms. I had to change the external wall thickness to 240mm and internal walls to 70mm to match the dimensions shown on the plans. So far, so good, I thought.
However, after I drew the last bedroom along one wall the space I had left to draw the bathroom was considerably less that it should have been! A quick check showed me that the total interior dimensions of the house were way smaller than I had wanted, even though the exterior dimensions were still correct and the walls were still showing as 240mm in the properties. So I measured the total wall thickness using the dimension tool and it told me that it was much thicker than 240mm!

OK, I thought, if the program is somehow making walls thicker than I want I will tell it to make the walls thinner by the amount it is increasing them. That didn't work either! To cut a long story short, I spent hours trying to fathom what the heck was going on and how to get round the problem, no matter what I did I could not get the building exterior and interior dimensions to be what I want before I start drawing interior walls.

I don't want the program to add anything to the exterior walls! As soon as I make the final wall join to complete the house outline I automatically get the extra thickness. I only want a wall that just shows one line for the interior of the wall and one line for the exterior of the wall. It's been a few days since I last tried anything so my recollection is a bit hazy but I think I tried using concrete block walls and that sort of worked except the walls were floating above the ground!

How can I get normal (brick veneer) walls that give me the correct exterior dimensions while giving me the correct house interior dimensions (i.e., before I start drawing interior walls)?? The TFP help is no use at all.
Thanks,
Dave (Canberra, Australia).

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum.

You have run into one of the limitations of TFP especially Deluxe - it is not possible to configue the veneer on a cavity wall. A default veneer thickness is added as soon as it detects an external wall (when it joins). If you choose a non-veneer wall you will not have the problem. The 100mm siding wall will do - just set the Core to the thickness you want and change the exterior Appearance to brick.

The foundation concrete walls will work too. If it is floating then either the Drop Face (Basic Tab) is set to zero (set it to the thickness of the floor), or check the FLoor Level for the Ground Floor in Settings /Buikding Locations (this controls all vertical elements). The Floor Level is the distance from the ground to the TOP surface of the floor. The floor thickness extends BELOW that level and the Drop Face effectively covers the floor and extends the brick to thre gorund.

Hope that makes sense and helps.

G'Day Allan, and thanks for your very speedy reply.
I can't get onto it again for a couple of days but will attack with gusto, armed with your suggestion(s), when I do.
I'll report back when I've had another play. ::)

Cheers,
Dave.

So far, so good, making good progress.
Thanks again, Allan.  :)
