Dupicating Members Horizontally

I am trying to duplicate timber members to form a batten screen to a sub-floor area as in the attached screen dump. I cannot see a way to do this, any clues.

Hi Bob,

Sorry but I am not quite clear what you are trying to do - do you mean you want to duplicate the 'pine' timber you have around the perimeter to go up the posts?

If that is what you mean and if the 'pine' timbers are actually Members (converted from Lines), then you what you need to do is select them all, right click and select Duplicate - drag them sideways (otherwise they will duplicate in the same position), then while still selected right click and Elevate (by the width of the member plus the spacing between them). While still selected, right click and choose Move and then drag them all back again. If you have Snaptrack enabled they should snap into the same postion but be separated vertically of course. Obviously you will have to repeat the process for others higher up.

It may also be possible, that by dupilcating them previously, you may already have several in the one spot. You could possibly select them individually (probably easiest in 3D) and Elevate to different heights, until you get rid of all the duplicates, but that MAY break the mitred corners (if they are mitred) because you can be sure which duplication you select.

If that vertical duplication of the 'pine' member is not what you meant then you may have to give more detail.

in 2D floorplan view try, select object(s), right click, click on "array" from drop-down list, and play with it...fairly self explanatory method to produce rows, columns, or array of duplicates, spaced evenly

Allan, they are members converted from lines, and yes I am trying to duplicate the battens up the post and around the perimeter. This form of architecture is common in Queens-lander homes. Thanks for the reply.
Douglas, I tried array but couldn't get it to work. Maybe I am not doing it right.

Allan, tried your method, while it works ok is very tedious and time consuming. Is there a simpler process.

Hi Bob,

You could use the Array that Doug referred to but all that would do is replicate the total number of rail sets you wanted side by side - you would still have to elevate each set and move them back into place.

Another option, which is quicker as long as you can get the appearance that you want is to use Railings / Commercial Railing / Horizontal. You will find you can set the total height, change the rail size and baluster size to the same and get a similar effect. You can turn the posts off so you just get just the rails, as in the image below.  This will also mitre the corners nicely if that isthe effect you want.

I can think of other solutions but this is probably easiest.

Another method with lots of design control is to create an image map, save as .bmp, use pure magenta color for transparency, and apply as a picture or texture to a surface, cube, wall, etc

Allan, thanks, quick option but spacing of battens are not equal, I will stick to your first option.
