Roof Design

I have searched the archives for a clue on how to create the attached roof, but started to confuse myself, so I am sure one of the TFP experts will be able to assist. I am trying to create a roof design as attached. Can you show me how if it is not too difficult. I must say being a long term TC user I am battling to adjust to the TFP way of doing things.

Hi Bob,

If what you are just wanting to do is make the 'north' (I presume) end roof a gable, all you need to do is select that edge (green arrow - all others red), right click select Properties, click Type (roof image) and select Gable.

If I have missed some other aspect of your roof image then ask again. That seemed to be the only thing that was not just an ordinary hip roof.

Thanks Allan, yes, I was not clear on what I wanted. The roof marked modified plan is what I am trying to draw. I hope this is clearer.

Hi Bob,

to make a gable on the right end you need  to select the roof, right click and select Break, then click on the edge of the roof where the gable starts (in line with the roof edge opposite) and as close to the corner as you can get (zoom in close). This now becomes a separate edge you can covert to a Gable.

Some times dragging this edge out makes it easier to see what you are doing, then drag it back again when converted.

Allan, I understand the method but implementing is a bit of a worry. What is the best way to line up the roofs as per the screen dump.

Hi Bob,

If you zoom in really close you can move the various edges even though they are very small. The arrows indicate the surfaces, some very tiny, and the direction the slope goes. Save first just in case!

You can also switch to Designers View or a 3D semi overhead view, select the roof, right click and select Match Plane. You then select the side you wan to match the other to and then the second one. (or is it the other way around - can't remember now and I am using my phone so can't check right now. Save first then try both - undo if necessary).

be sure to set all your gables before you try zoomed-in minor adjusting as other changes may cause you to go adjust again...

in other words, get all the setup correct, adjust to get it close, zoom-in close to make final minor adjustments.

Doug & Allan, following your instructions I got the roofs to line up and then proceeded to fill in the gable end, The results below:

Good to hear you got the roof set up as you wanted.

You did not say however what the problem was with the gable ends. Is it just the different colour or something else that is wrong? Colour setting is just the same as normal.

Allan, the larger gable should not be there, this section of roof should be roof area and not a gable end. Maybe I need to post a drawing to be more specific.

Hi Bob,

Sounds like the arrow pointing up that face, needd to be changed from Gable to Hip. It may be an arrow that does not even appear to have a face attached but it does, even if tiny.

from your design info I thought you wanted 2 gable ends.....and I agree with Allen, change the one from gable to hip should help you solve that location problem.

My suggestion was to set the other gable end (to the right end of house)...then go back to fine tune the other gable/walls (from 2D view), zoomed-in close for making small adjustments....to then get the roof lines desired at the peaks and ridges.

It may work fine to get the one exact and then make the other end as gable too....but once a roof is "done" right I try to leave it alone.

Allan & Doug, thanks for your replies.
As indicated, I got the roofs to line up but when I converted one end to a gable the gable spread across two roofs. I am obviously doing something wrong. I have attached a zip of the drawing, I am sure you will be able to sort it out for me.

Well none Dug, it looks like you split the wall on the right side, is that correct. Could you briefly explain how it was done.
