change roof thickness

First let me say thanks for all the help posted on this site--I am finding this program very difficult to learn and the solutions here have been very helpful.  I am attempting to design a garage with a low slope shed roof:  the garage is 24' deep (and approx. 36' wide, but that isn't important to the question.)  The back wall is 7' and the front wall is 9'.  I want a shed roof that is 12" thick with a total fascia height of 22".  I have managed to create the shed roof at the default 6" thickness, using the "picking points" method, and get it to sit on the walls correctly by adjusting the support heights at the front and back walls, but when I try to increase the thickness of the roof, I get stymied.  The program lets me change the thickness to 12" at the back (low) side, but nowhere else.  Making that change and changing the fascia height to 22" all around results in an exterior that looks correct, but panning to the inside reveals a roof that isn't sitting on the walls correctly.  What am I missing here?  Thanks!

A couple pictures (one from outside and one from inside) and a copy of the .bld file posted here would help others help you.

While I have never done what you have done, can picture it in my mind pretty well, I have no clue what does not look right about roof sitting on the walls.

Welcome to the forum!

You did not say in what way the roof is  'not sitting on the walls correctly' - Too high? Too low?

Technically the roof does not sit on the walls as such - it sits at the Wall Height as specified in Settings / Building Locations. Without seeing the model that may be where your problem lies.

From your description you should have the Wall Height in Building Locations set to 7ft as that is the lowest wall. Make sure the walls are all set to AutoExtend to Roof. Right click in the Catalogue and Add a roof with the right thickness and correct fascia size - do not touch the Support Height.

Insert the roof, select it, click on the 9ft edge then the two sloping edges so that these 3 arrows are all green and the 7ft edge arrow is red. Right click, select Properties and change the Roof Type to Gable. The only thing now to do is select just the 7ft edge of the roof (so this edge ONLY has a green arrow) and set the slope of the roof to 5 degrees or whatever you need so that the opposite wall is 9ft. The walls will just extend from 7ft as needed to reach the roof. There is no need to touch the Support Height.

After much trial and error (i.e. figure out to change fascia height first, then roof thickness, then framing members) I think I got what I am aiming for--the outside looks ok, but the inside view seems to show dark red (the fascia color) where it shouldn't.  Attached are inside framing shot (which looks correct other than the fact that the wall with windows in it doesn't render right, but I've read about that here already and am ignoring for now), inside shot (with the red showing) and outside shot, along with the file...  Please let me know what you think is going on with the red on the interior. Thanks!

Hi Kris,

The red is just your fascia showing because the walls are not high enough. Obviously you missed this point in my earlier post:

Make sure the walls are all set to AutoExtend to Roof.

If all the walls are set to Auto Extend (Wall Properties, Top and Bottom Tab) they will automatically stop at the roof - no need to set their height, make them sloping etc, that will happen automatically.

The only other thing you may want to do is change how close to the roof they extend. The default is 6" away ,to allow for a ceiling but if you are not having one, then you can set this to zero and the wall will go right to the underside of the roof surface.
