Trusses under Concrete Slab

Have a two story house model with a basement.  Basement has a 4" concrete slab.  However, when I ran the materials list it showed a large number of 2x10 and 1x12 boards.  When I viewed the model in truss view is showed framing under the concrete floor.  I also have one beam that runs at least 500 ft out of the basement floor.

When I deleted the floor the framing remained but the surface was gone.  I have run repair on the file but it had no effect.  When I first built the model I hand automatic floors on but I turned them off.  The attached picture is looking up from under the model.  You can see through to the sky where I deleted one of the floor sections.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

First of all it sounds as though you may have more than one floor, maybe an auto one plus one you have inserted. The auto floor defaults to a framed floor and maybe you inserted a concrete one. You must choose Slab as the floor Type on the Basic tab, not just change the Appearance to look like concrete - that will not change what is inside the floor.

To sort it out now, what may be easiest, is to position the camera, in 3D view, in the room (or rooms), select and delete the floor or floors.  You will have to turn surfaces on otherwise you will not be able to select them. If the floor is only displaying the framing, it cannot be selected and hence cannot be deleted.

Once you have deleted the floors you can insert a new one, defined as concrete, but, before you do see if the long beam has gone.  It may not be a floor beam at all but could be a wall beam. If it is is still there, you probably have a corrupt wall somewhere that is causing this. Usually a bad join causing a tiny fragment of wall, that can generate an beam or baseboard off into the distance.  This issue must be resolved or you will have have problems sooner or later.

Let us know how you get on with it.

Allen,

Thanks for replying so quickly.  I have snapped prints from a couple of different directions.  I am able to delete some of the floors that have trusses in them when I have surfaces on, but I can't get rid of what is remaining.  If I use the view filter and turn off floor trusses and leave floor surfaces on there is nothing visible or selectable for the truss sections that remain.  In all these images the floor surfaces are on.

The set of beams running out to the side look like floor to me.  The narrow edge is up, as you would expect for a floor support.

Also, the floors appear to be cut around the walls.  When in reality the walls would sit on the floor.  Doesn't this throw off the material estimates for flooring.  Do floors have to be built before walls to avoid this?

Allan Chesney

Sorry - more questions rather than answers:

Do the remaining beams go when you turn off the floors altogether?

Do they show when you go into 2D Designers View (you would have to turn the roof and ceilings off to see them)?

Can you select and delete them in Designers View?

Is that floor on the same location as the others?  You can have two locations and hence floors, in the same space so the surface of one may not be turned on.

Have you restarted the project since you deleted the floors? (that may clear the remaining beams possibly (?)

As in the image I suspect there is a corrupt wall here. The "narrow edge up beam" is probably the baseboard (skirting board) of the wall. A corrupt wall can cause the floor not to work properly.

There are three ways to insert walls, By Room (within the walls), By Perimeter (Outide walls) and By Picking Points. It sounds as though you have inserted them By Room which is why they do not go under the walls. Walls in adjacent rooms can be dragged together in Designers View. The auto floor is By Perimeter so it does go under the walls.

See how you go with the questions. If you need to post more images it is better to do so using JPG files, straight to the forum rather than PDF - it is easier to check than having to open a separate program to look at them (and file size is small).

If these questions don't help then you may have to post the BLD file here or email it to me if you prefer or if it is too big for the forum.

Allan,

After a restart and going to design view, with the surfaces and trusses on, I final was able to select the floor structure and delete it.  Actually, I selected and deleted five times, which may mean I had managed to get five iterations of the floor in the same location.

The beams extending out from the side of the house were part of the floor.

Thanks for the help.

Good to hear you got it sorted out.

Please check out that wall though - you should not get two textures as you have. Something appears odd at that point.

I am assuming you are referring to the interior wall that has the darker plywood color and the lighter spruce color at the bottom.  I believe that is a rendering issue.  It doesn't show up on the screen that way only when I printed it.

I did discover that I had two base boards on top of each other.  One pine and the other MFD.  The original wall started with MFD and I changed it to pine.  I made the change by highlighting baseboard and hitting select, then I selected the pine.

All the interior walls in the model had two boards.  It appears you need to highlight, delete, and then select to change from one board to another.

The two textures normally indicates two walls in the same place, the two textures 'fighting each other' to show. They do not always how in the onscreen view but can tend to 'flash' as you move the camera around. Rendering usually shows them up.

Baseboard are part of the wall object so if you had two baseboards then you had two walls forthem to attach to. If all your walls had two basebaords then if sounds as though you may have dupicated them but not moved the duplicate, so they are in the same space, or you have duplicated them to another location.

Save your project, then try deleting the wall that shows two textures in your image and see if there is another one still there.  I am just worried that if there are duplicated walls, you could run into problems later. It may be easier to fix things now rather than risk losing everyting later.

I think the two textures fight was because I had framing and sheathing both turned on, so the framing was trying to come through.  I deleted several walls and there was nothing there.

OK - that's good - best to check just in case!
