double brick cavity walls

sometimes when i draw the second wall, i can't get the cavity gap the size i wan't. it either overlaps or is too large. help please!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

From your description it sounds as though you are trying to draw two walls parallel to each other. If you choose one of the Veneer walls it will automatically add the exterior brick layer to the interior one as long as the four walls join correctly.

You will not be able to control the width of the cavity but if one of the standard walls does not have the dimensions you want, let me know and I can create a suitable one for you. Several have been posted to the forum in the past so if you use the forum Search for 'cavity wall' or 'doubke brick' you should find some posts from me with BIM files attached. You can import these and you will then have a variety of double brick cavity walls and hopefully one of the ones in the BIM file will be the size you want - if not let me know and I will make one for you..

I am wondering how you did the Search - when I do it I get 35 entries for Cavity Wall and 19 for Double Brick, both listing your question  first - See images.

Anyway I am now using my computer, not my phone, so I can give you a couple of references that have BIM files attached:

The first relates to Australian standards so may include the wall you need. If the precise wall measurements of Brick (Veneer), Cavity, Stud (Core) or whatever, are not there, let me know and I will make one to your dimensions. You will be able to change the width of the Core (interior wall) but not the Veneer or Cavity, so I will need to set these for you if what you want is not there.

hi Allen, i didn't know i had to include " when using search, (computor novice!). anyway, i read those messages and i don't think  i can use them. i just want 110mm external brick wall, 90mm internal brick with a cavity of about 30-50mm. Sounds easy but obviously isn't. Is it possible to do it on TFP?

Hi again Peter,

You do not need to add quotes around a word unless you want to search for two words together (eg "cavity wall"). This would only find both words together. You would still find it without the quotes but in that case it would find posts that have the word 'cavity' and 'wall' in them but not necessarily together (or the cavity may refer to a dental cavity  but wall would also have to be in the same post!). I did my search without the quotes.

What you want with the cavity wall is certainly possible in TFP but you must have the Veneer wass type as in the BIM files referred to in the previous post.  I have attached another BIM file that does include what you need. Any of them can be used as the Brick veneer is set to 110 and you can adjust the interior wall thickness by changing the wall's 'Core' setting.  For example if you choose the '270mm Double Brick with 50mm cavity', you can change the 'Core' setting to 90mm so you would then have 110mm brick 50mm cavity and 90mm brick.

Go to File / Catalogues / Import BIM to import the attached file. It will add a Veneer category to your Walls with two double brick walls and two brick and stud walls both with 2 cavity sizes. As mentioned before you can change the thickness of the interior stud or brick wall by changing the Core setting and you can save this with a new name. (Select one, right click and select Add Element, give it a name, change the core setting and save)

hi Allen, thanks for providing those bim files. unfortunately, my windows xp won't download them. An advert appeared on my screen for various programs that can download bim files for free. however, reading their agreement revealed costs but not how much. So, still no wiser.     Peter.

Hi Peter,

Bim file extensions open with TFPlan. You do not have to buy anything to get them to open in the program.

Allan explains how to add them or:

Do a search in TFPlan Help for BIM files and you will see a number of ways you can insert them into the program. You must first 'Save As' and place the download into a folder on your computer, then add them to the program.

Adding them to the program is a one time operation and they will be available for future use.

Hi Peter,

As Jack said, you do not open the file - just click on the BIM file at the end of my message and save it to your computer. Do not try to open it - just open TFP and go to File / Catalogue / Import BIM and select the downloaded file from your computer. When you do you will be presented with a split screen. Your existing catalogue will be on one side and the BIM file on the other. Just click Document on the BIM file side and the Transfer button will become active. Click the Transfer button and the new walls, from the BIM file, will be transferred to your catalogue and will appear as a Veneer Walls section in your list of walls.

thanks jack and allen, i went to "import BIM" and selected the downloaded file. i was presented with a block headed Version Incompatability. cannot open file. This project was created in a version TFP that is newer than the one i'm operating. click the link below to operate. so, i downloaded an updated 15.1 program. tryed again, still no good.

Hi Peter,

The version should not make any difference - if you click OK (or whatever is on the button), it should just carry on, as the BIM file itself is not linked to a version. It was created in later version so that is correct, but it should still work. Sorry - I should have warned you about the message.

hi Allen, i wasn't being 'flippant' in my last message about OPEN block. i just realised that i was trying to open the bim file when i hit the left mouse key. i'm still unable to import and transfer a bim file. when i follow your advice and go to file/catalogue/import bim, i dont receive the split screen as in your message but am presented with an 'open'  block.       Peter.

Can you give me two screen images please? One with the File/Catalogue/Impot BIM displayed and the other of the Open Block message. Please do not think that I don't believe you, I just want to see for myself to see how the menus and messages differ from what I see.
