Putting TFP on 2 computers

I'm going to have to send my laptop back to the service people as the fan seems to have quit.  It works for an hour or two then shuts down.  I have my old laptop with almost the same capability, a bit slower and limited to 2 GB of memory.  While covered by IMSI's license can I install my purchased TFP on the second machine?  How do I do it, if it is legal?

Hi Tom,

I think from memory, that the license agreement says you can have it on a desktop and a laptop as long as owned by and operated by the same person.

If you have an original CD copy then it should be just a matter of installing it. If it was downloaded then you will have to find the original file and the email with the license number etc.

Previously you could have just downloaded the trial version, which would give you two weeks anyway (presumably the repairs won't take that long) but now that V17 has been released the trial of V16 is not available. V17 is totally incompatible with previous versions so the trial of that will not help.

The only other solution is to suffer and bear the withdrawal symptoms until you get the other laptop back.

I sent an inquiry to IMSI to ask what was allowed.  I seem to have lost the reply as I transitioned between computers.  However they would not allow me to put the program on two laptops.  They explained that all I had to do was use windows to remove the SW from one, copy the download files to the other computer and install them.  The old key might not work but I could call there office to get help with that.  Finally when the main computer comes back I could repeat the process in reverse. 

Given I've been their customer for Design Cad 3d, Turbo Cad, and now TFP for probably 15 years their formula for helping me when I'm  terribly busy responding to a broken machine is not much appreciated.  I simply did not have the time to figure out how to do all those steps while getting the broken computer into the UPS box so that it will be back in time for my next trip.  The machine is shipped so it will be weeks before I'm back to working.

Tom,

It is absolutely OK to install on a second computer, so long as only one computer is in use at any time. You do not have to uninstall. As you do not have a CD/DVD hard copy You will have to copy the install files from one computer to the other. It should install with no problems. Try to use your original serial # and activation key - if you do get a Expired message just PM me here so that I can have one generated at reply back to you.

As of today I've got my computer back and fixed.  It took about 2 weeks once I sent it in and it had to make two trips to the service center.  (When I woke up and discovered a UPS cargo plane had crashed, while my computer was in UPS's air, I sweated a bit until I could find and check the tracking number.) 

Thanks to those who offered advice and help both in the thread and via e-mail.

Hi Tom.

Good to hear you are up andrunning again.

The one and only time (so far) I have had to send a computer in for service, they had a break-in and it was stolen! Thankfully they had already backed up the data and their insurance covered it. Because of technology advances I was able to get a much better laptop for the price!
