Roof Help

Hi all,

   I just can't seem to get the correct roof on my house, can somebody help?  I've attached 2 .bld files, one is the basic lay out and the other is my attempt.  The only way I can get anything close to what I want, an 'L' shaped rancher with the short Gable at right angles to the long Gable, is to use different locations and draw a combination of 'Roof by Perimeter' and 'Roof by Picking Points'; but, when I do this, the short Gable cuts into the house, and I can't get a brick exterior on one of the locations, probably because all the walls aren't connected?  Any help really appreciated?

from your description this is what I think you want.

If so, I simply added a roof by perimeter, then selected each end and changed it from hip to gable.

Is this what you wanted?

   Thanks for your response, appreciate it.  But, no that's not what I need to do.  I've included a couple of .jpgs of my house and hopefully you can see what I mean by the short & long gable being at right angles to each other?  Also, how did you make the .bld drawing into a .jpg?

Ray,

What Doug has done looks like what you have described, so presumaky we are both missing something in your description.

The only thing is that the porch is not under the gable but that is just a matter o picking the points so that you cover it.

It sounds as though you are trying to make it too complicated. You should not need two locations for this type of roof - just draw the L shape using Roof By Picking Points and change the two does to gable.

Hello Allan,

    Thanks for the response, but again, may I ask if you would look at the .jpgs of my house?  In the 2732 .jpg you can see there is a chimney, and where the chimney is there is no small hip as FP wants to put in?  To the left of the chimney is the garage and to the right is the main house. In the 2732 .jpg is the short side of the 'L' and again there is no small hip like FP wants to give me?  And I have tried many different starting/ending points trying to draw my roof by picking points, but somehow FP wants to always give me weird Hips that I can't figure out how to make into my 'L' shaped Gables? I've also now included another .jpg of the far side of the house,( looking at the long Gable end where the short Gable joins into it), and again you can see it's not a Hip like FP wants to give me?  Any help really appreciated?

Ray,

Still not fully clear on this but the mention of the chimney makes me think you are referring to the 'step' in the roof at this point.  If that is the case then you just need to set the middle of the roof hip to gable also.  The image below hopefully will help (if this is what you are referring to).

Also, how did you make the .bld drawing into a .jpg?

In TFP you make a 3D view (menu/3d view/3d overview), adjust camera until you get the view you desire in 3D on screen

Then menu/file/export/2d image....save as .bmp  (save as .jpg is broken)

Use another graphics program (Irfanview or Photoshop or similar) and convert .bmp to .jpg and size/crop/adjust as desired

at any place you want to change, select, right click, select "break"....makes a split.  Select part you want to change, right click, properties, change from dialog box

4 choices for wrought iron
- search in catalog; I don't know it its there...check end of index in help file for catalog objects list
- search web for a 3D object; many free sites
- search web for .jpg image of WI you want, insert rectangular object and apply .jpg image on surface (like a photo-board, you can use a .bmp with "magenta" for transparent parts)
- generate your own 3D object in another 3D program....since WI is really 2.5D you can make a .ai compound shape and "extrude" it in a 3D program, import into TFP

I think we are getting to understand now - hopefully.  I couldn't get the 'Break' in the roof to work - it still wanted to make a gable for the full wall but by adding the gables by 'Picking the Points' it was OK. You can add to the existing roof by Picking the Points and it will just add it in - then create the gable.  I have returned your original bld file with the roof all on one location, so you can see how it was done.  Hopefully this time it is close to what you wanted.

In the process of doing it I found a previously unknown feature (bug?).  When you drage the added gable inside the main roof area the added roof disappears (fair enough since it is coved by the other roof anyway) but as you drag it close enough so that it still sticks out a little the gable fill disappears as soon as it comes inside the main roof perimeter.  The end gable was OK - you can turn of the 'wall extend' and turn on the gable to get a different texture but the one at the back of the house was difficult - even though I turned the wall extend (note the Break in the wall at the intersecting wall) I could not turn on the gable fill unless it was just Outside the main roof.

You may have to play with this a little more to get the different fill in the gable.

If you install the free Microsoft Image Re-sizer Tweak-ui tool....there is an easier/faster way as well....

after save as .bmp....select the file and rename from .bmp to .jpg...say OK to the warning message. Then right click the now named .jpg and "resize" to something like 640x480.  Result is a 50K .jpg file from a 1MB .bmp file....and the results are very good...at least for a internet screen viewing....even saved as 1024x768 is very good and still small file.

And if you use Microsoft (free with "office") Image Viewer...you can adjust and crop etc. From screen save to final small .jpg is less than 1 minute.
