Moving a door partway past a wall break into the next wall.

Hi, I am relatively new to TFP so this may be a newbie question but didn't find any answers on my search. I have a 36' long wall of which 19' are at 8' tall and 17' are at 10' tall. I want to put a 72" sliding door on this wall with part of the door in both sections of wall heights. Is there a way to slide or join the 2 different height walls so that the door could be slid to share space on both the walls?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You did not say what version you are using so I am assuming V16.
I don't think you can put a door in a wall break but I would suggest that you try using a stepped top wall rather that two different height walls. I must stress that I have not tried this and am away from the computer so can't at present, but it may work. Just draw a single wall, go to the wall Properties, and set the top of the wall to stepped.  The only problem may be that it will want to make the step in the middle.

If that doesn't work the you way have to make the higher part of the wall as a "second floor" with 2' high walls and without a floor of  course. This way the door is just in the Ground Floor 8' wall with no break in it.

Thank you for the information Allan. My mistake, I have v.17.5.5.1001. Does this version also have a Wall Properties tab and I am just not seeing it?

Yes, there is a solution => stacking walls.
Create a flat wall (without wall breaks) with height  = 96" (Green wall in the image attached) + a flat wall (without wall breaks) with height 24" (Blue wall in the image attached) => change the elevation of the 24" wall to 96" => place it in the correct position => the door will run in the lower wall

Hi Patricia, thank you for the information. I have built this house 3 different ways and still cannot get the ceiling to rise above 8'. Can you see what I need to do to raise the ceiling?

Hi there,

You're welcome! 

The auto ceilings inside the house are automatic => the auto ceiling adopts the elevation of the shorter wall, so if you have a lower wall, the ceiling elevation will be the top of the lower wall => a solution: deactivate the auto ceiling (property bar - right of the screen)and create a manual ceiling using the floor tool => set the desired elevation.
TFP, as any program, has a learning curve. The best way to learn the program, IMO, is practice + practice + practice => Read and follow the manual (this is important), see the videos => try to create elements not related with your project, so you will become familiar with the commands and how to develop the different components.

Thanks again. With a little back and forth I got it to work. Set the floor to a 1/2" and raise it 120". I think the trickiest part was placing windows on the lower of the stacked walls. I nuged the upper wall over to select the lower wall for window placement and then nudged the upper wall back into position.

There is an easy way to do this => Visualize your project in Elevation view mode => add the window on the wall (you can add doors and windows in Elevation view mode) => select the new window => set position and elevation.
