Mystery Line

On the attached file, I've got a line that projects from the house at the 2nd story that only appears in the 3D & 2D rendered views that appears to go off onto infinity.  I have tried everything I can think of to delete it, to no avail as it does not appear in the 2D plan.  A problem this element causes is when zooming to fit, it jumps back to where my entire drawing is little more than a speck.  Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi - Welcome to the Forum.

This was an interesting one - I have not see this happen before. The long line from the upper floor was the basebaord of one section of wall. Turning off the baseboards do not fix it however but deleting the section of wall did.

If you select the section of wall highlighted on the image it will remove the problem, then click on the wall adjacent to it and stretch it so that it meets up with the other wall.

While this solves the problem I could not see any reason why it occurred in the first place!

Hi,

I don't have v12 which I know is new code - but certainly in previous versions a corrupt wall section could give a line shooting off to infinity. (Also seen for fences)

I don't like unexplained corrupt walls, as the wall I suggested deleting seemed fine, so I had another look at it and there was a very small piece of wall inside the intersection of one of the interior walls that was causing the problem. If you zoom in really close you will see what I mean.  Deleting this tiny piece of wall removes the superlong baseboard.

I generally find it best to take intersecting walls right through to the other side, and delete the bit that sticks out the other side if necessary, to make sure the wall joins correctly. You have to go at least to the mid point of the wall to make the connection. When you look closely at a wall join, there should not be any lines in the middle of the intersection. Delete the little bit of wall and then drag your interior wall through the exterior one and you will see what I mean - you end up with a clean 'open' wall intersection.
As Steve said corrupt walls can cause some wierd effects like this although V12 does seem better than earlier versions in this regard.

I remember we worked on a kitchen lighting problem (dark/black ceiling) on a post a couple weeks back, and the walls were joins of thick and std walls which resulted in an angled line at the corner joints (in 2D views)...

do you suppose that caused the dark ceiling lighting problems???

Allan Chesney

Doug,

No I don't think so.  I did not change any walls, all I did was to put the materials of the furniture back to the defaults and it fixed the ceiling.  There is an intereaction between materails and some materails are 'not recommended' ones.  I suspect these cause problems when rendering. Also some of the walls were set to super bright. Lots of very bright or light objects extend render time too.  I suspect there is a lot to learn in this area yet.

Thank you very much, Allan.  I checked the walls very carefully and found & eliminated the problem.
