Getting gables correct

My house is a basic 1 story ranch with an attached two car garage.  It has an "L" shape overall.  There are a total of three gable ends.  Two that run along the main ridge beam of the house and 1 that is 90 degrees to the main ridge line.  When I try to make all three ends a gable end I don't get a proper gable on one of the ends along the ridge beam it turns back into a hip end.  If I force a gable end it creates a single valley over the garage that creates a large, very tall wall on one end.  Why can't I get is to create a two valley gable roof that intersects the main roof with gable ends?

Can you attach a Plan view or the file itself - that will make it much easier to see what you are describing.

The typical approach is to right click the roof edge where you want the gable and "break" the roof, then select a part/section only and change properties to a gable.....harder to describe than to do. See help file for "break" and play around and you'll probably figure it out, or do as suggested by Allan and post the .bld file with question.

Three gable ranch houses are very common in California. I have attached a floor plan that is fairly typical (I didn't put in all the interior wall, though). I have been unable to get all three gables installed. I've used the normal roof tool and even tried the break tool.

I played with it and have no solution so far.

I see the issue in TFP.

I have seen a solution before so not sure why as yet.

Will think more.

Suggest you try drawing a roof top view to see how the roof peak lines converge or not and see if trying various roof slopes will help.

See attached files....I got close.  TFP does not like two adjacent walls (outside corner) to both have gable ends.

I made a break in each wall and split to make part gable and part hip.

Problems still with pitch and overhangs but maybe you can work out the details.

I also tried two roofs on 2 locations but still had overhang issues...maybe it takes 3 locations and 3 roofs...or more, with breaks???

I think the solution to this one is to put part of the roof on a different location.  This worked quite simply. The only trick is to shape the second roof as in the plan - by creating the pointed section it eliminates the overhang sticking out of the gables and by using the Nudge tool you can align the two roof edges perfectly.  The green arrow sides of  the roof should all be set to gable.

Thanks Allan, yours looks the best best solution...I tried a roof on an added location but was unable to get it to work but I did not shape the roof as cleverly as you did...I tried a rectangular shape.  Good thinking on your part!

Thanks for looking at this. Allan's final is how it is supposed to look. It seems odd to have to go to this much effort to generate a common roof structure. Perhaps it's a tough algorithms to work out so the programmers all try to be busy on other things when it's time to fix roof bugs.

I am going to try to work out how Allan did it from his description and pictures. Houses with 3 or more gables are very common on the west coast.

Maybe I should take some pictures and send them in to ... who makes this? I bought it from IMSI but I know they did not program it.

I tried the breaking & picking points and couldn't do it. Could you give me a break down of how you did it? did you break at the dimension point? Did you use the roof I had on it or remove it and start again? Inquiring minds want to know !

is on to something. If I drop the snap down to 1" I can make the wider gables 1" farther out on the long side. This keeps the two roofs from forming a hip on that side. I could probably get it closer but 1" difference is hardly discernible.

Sorry - I meant to attach the BLD file as well and forgot. 
Using two locations is the easy - no fiddling with break points either and trying to get the edge to look continuous. It is as quick to draw as the main square roof. Just go to Locations, click on the Ground Floor Location and Add New - it will create a new one with the same specs.  Then just draw the roof by Picking Points and use the nudge if necessary to align the edge exactly so the facia is continuous. There is a tiny issue with the soffit (unless it is raked), but it is not likely to be seen unless you go in real close.  Turn the overhang off on the two 'pointed' edges of the roof that 'attach' into the other roof.  Hopefully that is clear enough to follow.

Select the roof edge you want to break, its arrow turns green...

right click and select break from menu list, click on roof approx. where you want the break (turns one roof line into 2 lines)

If the break point is not exactly where you want it, click and drag the point along the line

You may wish to draw a construction layout line for ref. instead of estimating.

I use Your roof and made 2 breaks level to inside the Wall hen made it gable
