How-2 - Shed Roof - 2 story space - cathedral ceiling

Other messages speak to parts of this, but I'm trying to put the whole thing together.

I have a 2-story plan, for which the one main room is to be a 2-story space, with a one-plane angled (shed) roof.

Let's say nominally, each floor has 8' high walls.  The 2-story space has a sloping ceiling/roof from the top of the 2nd story (17' with floor thickness), down to mid-height of 2nd floor, say, 13' (8' 1st floor, 1' floor thickness, 4' of 2nd floor).

1st question:  in this room - do I have a 2nd floor, or do I exclude this area from the 2nd story and just make the first floor walls taller?  Question 1a - if I keep a 2nd floor, do I set the low end to 4', and set the end wall to a sloping top, 4' to 8' ?

When I try the 2nd approach - keeping a modified 2nd floor (and deleting the intervening floor/ceiling), I get a horizontal line (baseboard?) where the 2nd floor would have been.  I don't get a continuous wall.

Then - what happens where this 2-story space meets the regular second-story walls?  If I have my regular 2nd story walls, on two sides (call them south and west), and my altered height/shape 2 story walls on the other two sides (call them north and east), how does the roof work?

I have had no luck at all in making a simple, one-plane roof over the two-story space.  I someone can do a walk-thru of solving this, I'd realy appreciate it.

I don't know whether I quite understand what you are trying to do - a sketch may help to get the picture of it.  There are several ways of doing what I think you are trying to do so the image below is really just to ask if this is what you mean.  I have just added a floor ONLY (by Picking Points - no walls required) on the second floor location - it is selected so you can see it.  Is this sort of what you are trying to do?

Remember that the roof sits at the wall height of the location it is sitting on. Any sloping walls are ABOVE this wall beight.  If the vertical part of a wall is only 5 ft say, then the wall for that location must be set at 5 ft. The roof will extend above that height and the wall will extend to fill the space when a gable is present.  In the image the wall is only 8 ft at the low end and the second floor is inserted just by Picking Points - you can place it at any height this way by setting the floor height of the second floor location.

If you can attach a drawing of what you want to do would make it much easier to give specific help.

or alternatively attach a .bld file and an image from the .bld file explaining/showing what is wrong and how you want it changed.

Well, I am a rookie, and I am going to need some "step zero" help, here.

First, I don't know how to generate a snapshot picture file from a 3-d view.  The only option I see is "print to file" which generates a .prn  file.   I don't know how to generate a jpg, tiff, or similar from a 3-d view.  My photo editor program does not read .prn files.

Second, I still have yet to have any success in generating a simple shed roof like the one in your thumbnail.  The only thing I'm able to do is create a two-plane gable roof, even if the beginning and ending wall heights are different.  Doing it that way results in a lopsided gable, with the peak nearer the higher wall, but still a two-plane gable roof.  If you can give me a walk-thru for creating a simple single-plane, shed-style roof, or even a flat roof, that would help tremendously.

Third - for lack of being able to generate and attach a picture, let me try to describe the real problem, and see if you can make sense of it.

Start with a simple rectangular perimeter building.  1 story.  40' long in the east-west direction, and 20' deep in the north-south direction.  Let's start with a gable roof with the center ridgeline in the east-west direction - the longitudinal direction of the plan.

Now, let's cut a "notch" out of the northeast corner of the floor plan.  Make the "notch" 15' long in the east-west direction measured from the east end of the bldg, and 10' deep in the north-south direction from the north side.  You would now have a "stubby-L" shaped plan.  (You can imagine an outdoor deck or patio in the notch space.)  The new north-south wall on the inside of the notch is placed 15' from the original east end of the building.  The new east-west wall on the inside of the notch is lined up with the original ridgeline of the original gable roof. 

What I want to do is maintain the original shape of the gable roof, just uncovering the notch or patio space.  This means that the new east-west notch wall will be tall, extending to the full height of the original gable at its peak.  I have had no luck at all in making a simple shed roof, or maintaining the south half of the original gable roof, that covers the remaining "wing" of the plan, south of the notch space, extending out to the original east end of the plan.

Let me know if this makes sense, or at least, teach me how to create picture file from a 3-d view.

Hi again,

I think I have got a picture of what you are trying to do and if I am right you don't need a shed roof at all.

Anyway - first things first. To export a 3D View just select File/Export and you have 2D image, 2D drawing or 3D model. Select 2D Image, and choose JPG as this is the smallest and select a smaller size.  You can also use View 3D Real View but this uses the sun at specific times of the day and year and interior lighting - that is a whole new ballgame and has a few bugs to work around to get it right.

For your roof problem all you need to do is draw your L shape walls, insert a roof and change the end walls and the 'notch' walls to gable.  The image should help.
