How do i put a different color wall above and below the chair rail?
and on a half height wall - how do i put a cap on it?

Doug.S

I don't think there is a way like you might expect in the wall properties dialog box...but here are 3 ways...EDIT: OK make that 4, I thought of another way...

1. using another location for the same place (i.e. duplicate the location using a new name), insert another wall in the same place, same height s the bottom of the chair rail and slightly wider than the existing wall (you may have to duplicate any openings or doors or windows...or work around them)

2. insert a thin "cube"  such as 1/8" thick sized to fit between the chair rail and bottom molding...set collision avoidance off, you may need several for each part of the wall....similar to applying a sheet of tile or manual wallpaper.

3. also look here
http://forum.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,338.0.html
to get the wainscoting...select trim,  chair rail, then "select" and from wainscot panel group list, choose a panel, OK, then set desired heights
see image below

EDIT:  4.  Generate an image in a photo edit program like photoshop, PSP or similar....with all the desired stuff such as moldings and split textures etc.  Then import that to the catalog or place the .bmp or .jpg file in the TFP textures folder on your PC, then "apply" that to a plain wall much like you would a paint chip color or wall paper.  You need to make the image scaled/proportioned similar to the wall size/ratio so you don't have to stretch the image to fit the wall...or to "tile" it too much (horizontal 'tile' only, not vertical 'tiling'). Depending on your viewing and render qualities the image may be small or large file/# of pixels.

For a "cap" or top along the wall (set wall height properties to not extend to ceiling but set to 'level' top and at 4' for example) ....insert a "cube", sized like a 2x6 laying on its side, or similar, textured as wood or desired material, locate it using 2D view, elevate to sit on the wall, turn collision detection off so you can set it into the top of the wall to avoid a lot of aligning with the wall top.

search this forum for key words and you might find an example image or more clues on how to make/use a rectangular cube shape

As Doug said there are a number of ways of doing this. Option 3 is the "official" way to do it but option 1 is probably the easiest.  The duplicated wall on the second location only needs to a fraction thicker and if it is set to use crown moulding then this will appear on the lower wall automatically so you don't have to worry about setting the chair rail on, height etc. In the image I just changed the lower wall crown moulding to a border and that was it - it goes up and down as you set the height of the wall. Doors and windows will automatically cut through both walls when they are in the same space, even if they are on different locations.  You can even put two thicknesses of wall on the one location - just use the Nudge (arrow Keys) to move the second wall into the other - you don't even need to turn collision off.

"insert a thin "cube""
how????
i looked everywhere!

Doug.S

its cube to me but apparently a "box" in TFP

see this
http://forum.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,315.0.html

Insert a box, then change the dimensions/size so it looks like a thin flat sheet....example 4' tall, 8' wide (as wide as the length of the wall) and 1/8" thick....like a piece of thin wallboard,

then texture it and align it against a wall and voila you have any texture you want any size on any part of a wall.
or if textured like ceramic tile, you now have a back splash or a tiled wall in a bathroom

so i have to import the shape - as a 3ds file?

anon125

so i imported the HUGE triangle.
but when i try to make it small - it vanishes or goes miles away!
and
i need to rotate it so it is flat to the ground
and
can i save it as the smaller one?
thanks for your patience

Allan Chesney

You can set the size of 3DS objects when you import them - it asks whether you want Imperial or metric (if you choose the wrong one the size can blow out or shrink dramatically).  Once imported you can change the size again.  If you right click it in the elements list and edit the original, you can make it what you want and it will stay that size for later. Make sure you say YES when it asks if you want to save the Catalog when you close the program.

If you insert and then change the size it can relocate itself in the plan and go outside of the model area - NOT desirable as you can lose them that way.  This really is a bug that should be fixed.  It should stay where it was originally put.

You can change it to any angle by changing the X Y Z Orientation settings in the Properties box.

This seems typical of many 3D programs when changing scales during export/import; as not all programs universally use a common scale (even if only in .3ds file format , let alone other file format conversions too).

The issue usually is: where was 0,0,0 of the object, relative to the coordinates of 3D space, when object was made in the originating program.  If object center is at 0,0,0 then typically size changes make no difference to location. But if, for example, the location was z=100mm and later changed to ft during an import, 100' makes it move a large distance.

If you ever try the "supplemental" extras supplied with TFP on CD in the other catalog: such as "TurboFLOORPLANv12 - xxxxx.bdb", I found the object centers were off quite a bit. and also especially the "red cube" light source on lights....yielding renders with weird lighting until you sort out light source location.

Also not all programs use the same orientation for x,y,z.  Some use y = up and some use z = up etc.  So re-orientation is sometimes needed too, not just for re-positioning,  but for example to get furniture to set its legs on a floor and not a wall.

Good thing the tools are provided to "adjust" for these things in TFP...I think the programmers figured that out long ago.

Some of the fun of 3D!
