Roof Question

How do you make the corners of the roof or decorative edge like you see in the box. I tried all sorts of ways and couldn't figure it out.

Hi Linda,

I downloaded mine so I do not know what is on the box but there are some decorative elements in a folder of that name under Interior accessories and in other places. It may be  question of looking in each group.

Also, if you can't find what you want within TFP, you may find it on the Internet  (search for .3ds objects, many are free some cost $)

Or you can make your own in another 3D program. Sometimes its as easy as extruding a wingding font character. I recently made an eagle weather-vane that way. Many fonts are free on the web.

Also look at Google Sketchup free .skp objects which import into TFP.

Thank you, I will check into it. Also, can moldings be placed on the upper Kitchen Cabinets or would I also have to search on the internet for those as well.

Not sure what sort of moldings you are looking for but there are a couple of CMF Mantle Beams under HVAC that may be useful - resized obviously.  In the image a couple of brackets too from Interior Accessories. Remember too you can usae your own photos to apply as surfaces too to give a decorative appearance.  What sort of look are you wanting to achieve?

Cool, it never occured to me to check in that category. I think the mantle pieces will work & of course resizing it. The top kitchen cabinets sometimes have molding on it. My kitchen at home has both top & bottom moldings and it looks really nice, it's a finishing touch, so I wanted to do the same thing in the program. Last night I was looking in the program for something similar but I never check in the HVAC category. Thanks alot Allen, you've helped me so much, I appreciate it alot.

Regarding the corners of the roof - if you mean the small wrap around hip roof similar to the picture on the box and user guide cover, the following will achieve it.

Insert >Roof >Roof by picking points
pick the external face of the walls, if this is difficult I find it easier to run around the walls using the Tools > Layout > Line tool, first. (easier to snap to)

Then select the roof you just inserted and change the hips you want into gables.

Next add a new Location - say 'Corners'
and on that location draw a square on te 2D plan, lining up with the side walls, using the Tools > Layout > Line tool - say 450mm x 450mmm.

Then insert a Roof > Roof by Picking Points - the four corners of each square.

The roof corners blend into the main roof similar to that shown on the TFP box.

You can then add an Eavstrough (I call it an eaves gutter) which can be found under Plumbing Fixtures > Exterior Plumbing Fixtures.

Thank you very much Ray for the information. I fgured it out the other day, but I used the roof settings. There's an option at the bottom screen, I think in the second tab & there's a horizontal & vertical setting. So I isued the horizontal setting of 2'  & then there's a drop down menu where you can either pick flat, gable or hip. I picked the flat setting and 2' feet horizontal and it gave me the nice corners.

Any chance of posting a copy of the image used on the box?  I do not have the box or User Guide (other than the PDF and it does not have an image on it).  I am curious now what the house looks like!

OK Here it is, not exactly like on the box but it comes close. I'm just happy that I can modify the corners.

Coincidentally I today saw the box for the first time - or a least an advert for it in a brochure from a local store - so now I know that the image is the same one that appears briefly when the program first opens.  I thought it might be but it is always so quick I could not see what the roof looked like.

Your model is looking good - you should post some images in the Gallery section.  From what I can see through the windows it looks like some inside views would be good also.

Where I am/live (Michigan, USA), those extensions from outer edge of roof back to house that form a decorative triangle of sorts is called an eaves return or probably more often a "roof return"

Hi Doug,

I think that's what the term is called here too (Miami), but I couldn't remember it until you mentioned it.
I'm  posting a few of my pics in the gallery. Nothing spectacular, it's just a hobby.
